Elizabeth Weitzman TheWrap The most generous assumption is that the script was watered down by too many studio notes, pushing for ever-broader scenarios and ever-denser characters. Jan 8, 2025 Full Review Noah Berlatsky Chicago Reader Old-school rom-coms can feel mechanical in their remorseless drive to grind out their happily ever afters in spite of character or logic. Sweethearts, in contrast, is a gentle little film that has real heart Dec 20, 2024 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Bright, breezy and requiring little in the way of close attention, the teen rom-com “Sweethearts” is perfect for those who prefer their movies to be barely more than background noise. Dec 9, 2024 Full Review Mark Meszoros The News-Herald (Willoughby, OH) With humor, heart and more than a bit of teen-movie raunchiness, Sweethearts succeeds in capturing that time in life when you’ve started college but are still trying to hold on to what you loved about high school. Rated: 2.5/4 Dec 31, 2024 Full Review Megan McLachlan The Contending Weiss and co-writer Dan Brier’s script honors the rat-a-tat patter of Nora Ephron’s banter, and the leads have friendly chemistry, but it’s what’s going on around the couple’s story that makes this a hometown you’ll want to go back to for the holidays. Dec 19, 2024 Full Review Jennifer Green Common Sense Media This return-to-high-school adventure rises slightly above others in the overstuffed canon of John Hughes knockoffs thanks to likeable leads (Shipka, Hiraga, and Hearon) and some quirky set-ups. B K Being a huge Nico fan, I thought this film was very lovable. Something you could stream at home and feel like your time was well-spent. Kiernan is not my favorite actress, but she was believable enough. This is not a story that will win any awards, but was fun for those who like a good YA romantic comedy. In addition, it was great to see the cast and filmmakers at the Savannah Film Fest. They did a great review of the making of the film at post-screening panel which made the film even more likable. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/26/24 Full Review Sheila W This movie was pure garbage. The writing was atrocious. The acting was even worse. I'm only giving it a star because I was able to watch the entire thing. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/26/24 Full Review Horror fan 4 An absolute blast. I loved the characters and story. I really appreciated the ending as well. It's not your typical Romantic Comedy. Tim Treakle Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Steve D I like the cast hate the script. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Tony T A captivating movie that breaks the cliche of typical rom-coms. There are well-thought twists and turns that keep you guessing and the movie isn’t very predictable, one of the best rom-coms I’ve seen in a while. A sequel would be nice. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/13/24 Full Review Xavier B Original and refreshing take on the thanksgiving break genre. I really enjoyed all the moments with both main characters Ben and Jamie, however, when the movie tried to include sub plots of other characters, for example Palmer, it felt short and a bit forced for the sake of another character. Other than that, pretty enjoyable movie. Ending really surprised me with not including the usual getting together sort of thing for the main characters, which is a good and bad thing for me personally. It was a satisfying, unsatisfying ending to put it lightly. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/11/24 Full Review Read all reviews
