James S Originally saw this film while in college. Viewed it again after reading Robert Caro's LBJ bio, "Master of the Senate". Made-for-TV historical bio-pic about the 1950s McCarthy hearings. Balanced post-Watergate (1977) effort, drawing a few paralells with Nixon (himself a lesser-character). Burgess Meredith (fresh from his critically acclaimed "Rocky" role) steals the show uttering the immortal question, "Have you lost your sense of decency, Senator?" Patricia Neal turns a noteworthy performance as steel-spined Sen. Margaret Chase Smith. Peter Boyle more than holds his own in the difficult title role. Ambitiously includes Truman, Marshall, Acheson, Ike, RFK & Roy Cohn portrayals. Three hours well spent. Dated references to same-sex attraction.
