Audience Member A strong melodrama made all the more enjoyable by seeing it narrated by a benshi. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Saw this accompanied by a benshi (narrator & voice actor) and the overall experience was superb. I give the movie about 3.5 stars and the benshi adds about another star. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting early Mizoguchi melodrama served with benshi narration, which the film probably doesn't need. Many of Mizoguchi's films I've seen have a mythical, fairy tale kind of undertone, and this is even more apparent here with the benshi and the rather contrived story. This has none of the fluid lengthy camerawork that grace films such as Sansho the Bailiff and Life of Oharu, instead it shows more influence from Murnau and even Soviet montage. Otherwise the story features the typical self-sacrificing woman and the damage wrought on her by fate. I didn't really about the ending as it felt too unrealistic.
