Critics Consensus

Neither entertaining enough to recommend nor remarkably awful, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles may bear the distinction of being the dullest movie ever made about talking bipedal reptiles.

Shadow and Act Staff Shadow and Act I can’t think of a recent blockbuster that’s been raked across the coals as much as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Sep 15, 2022 Full Review Peter Hartlaub San Francisco Chronicle The whole "TMNT" movie is over-inflated; like watching an otherwise tolerable music video, stretched out to 101 minutes. Rated: 1/4 Mar 20, 2020 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times A shockingly boring, endlessly unimaginative advertisement for pizza, soft drinks and the capitalist ideal. Rated: 1/5 Mar 20, 2020 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film This version of TMNT doesn’t quite have the heart or development that keeps you as engaged or entertained throughout. It does some parts well but mostly it falls flat. Rated: D+ Aug 19, 2024 Full Review Benjamín Harguindey EscribiendoCine The way the turtles relate to their past, their father, and the villain of the movie, in such an improbable way that it seems forced -- even for a comic. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/10 Aug 15, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Indeed, motion capture and a push toward photo-real animation result in rather gross heroes (with nostrils), particularly in the case of Splinter, whose slimy quality incites some latent Bubonic anxiety. Paul S This is one of the most epic movies I've ever watched! The visuals were amazing, the Turtles looked great, and the action was awesome! I definitely recommend it for action and superhero fans, and of course for fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle franchise! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/26/25 Full Review kish b ★★★½ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) is a loud, messy, Michael Bay-produced fever dream that somehow still manages to be a ridiculous amount of fun if you check your brain at the door and embrace the chaos. Megan Fox’s April O’Neil is surprisingly likable (she actually tries), Will Arnett steals every scene he’s in as the smarmy cameraman Vernon, and the Turtles themselves look… honestly pretty great in motion. The facial capture is solid, the designs are comic-accurate enough, and the voice cast (Johnny Knoxville as Leo, Tony Shalhoub as Splinter) nails the personalities. Michelangelo is still the funniest Turtle in any version, and his one-liners land way harder than they have any right to. The action is pure Bayhem: the snow-mountain Humvee chase down the slope is legitimately thrilling, the sewer lair fight has some cool beats, and the skyscraper-elevator sequence is peak 2014 insanity. The score slaps, the humor is goofy but works, and there’s a genuine "brothers sticking together" vibe that hits the TMNT spirit dead-on. It loses a full star and a half because the plot is paper-thin, Shredder looks like a walking knife factory exploded, William Fichtner’s Eric Sacks is a nothing villain, and half the dialogue is pure cringe ("Tonight I dine on turtle soup!"). It’s dumb as bricks. Three and a half stars: one for the Turtles actually feeling like teenage brothers, one for the over-the-top set-pieces that are stupidly entertaining, one for the nostalgia rush, and half a star because every time Mikey says "Cowabunga" I still grin like I’m eight years old again. It’s not good cinema… but it’s a damn good time at the movies. 7/10. Heroes in a half-shell, now with 300 % more explosions. 🐢💥🍕 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/17/25 Full Review Richard T Emergency electric to whom it may shock to be am specking with right now. I need all your riches for all purpose. Common sense. Point of view. I need your guidance. PhD Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/14/25 Full Review Kyle C I don't know why people dislike it I thought it was good the fights and character development was a good way to start it up and shredder was more mysterious than any previous version of the turtles the shredder did kinda look like super shredder and the way they learned ninjutsu from a book is kind of strange but I like the slight change some scenes were dry like the opening scene after showing like drawings of the turtles and splinter narrating but overall I give this movie a 8.5 to 9 out of 10 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/09/25 Full Review Meliana G Love it! Makes me feel young again seeing this. ❤️ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/05/25 Full Review zach S. it’s a micheal bay movie and you can tell because shredder looks like a aoe or tlk transformer. the movie itself is alright, i think the action is done well and the cgi for the turtles is great. the story is kinda boring and the movie feels like filler for a while but it’s definitely entertaining. the turtle designs are alright, i don’t hate them as much as other people. i think overall it’s a fun movie but not the best Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/18/25 Full Review Read all reviews
