Spawned from a lab experiment gone awry, teenage terrapins Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael live in the sewers beneath New York. Although their rodent sensei, Splinter, advises against showing themselves above ground, the justice-loving, pizza-eating brothers can't stand idly by while evil Shredder and his minions terrorize the city. Indeed, motion capture and a push toward photo-real animation result in rather gross heroes (with nostrils), particularly in the case of Splinter, whose slimy quality incites some latent Bubonic anxiety.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is currently the number-one movie in America — a development largely viewed like it’s a plot by the evil Shredder himself. Technically directed by Jonathan Liebesman, this blockbuster reboot bears the stamp of its superstar producer, Transformers maestro Michael Bay: a sturdy children’s-toy concept sits uncomfortably alongside destructive urban combat and awkward double entendres about turtle erections. Garnering bad reviews from both film critics and nostalgic fans, it nonetheless displaced its direct competitor, the much, much better-liked Guardians of the Galaxy, to seize control of the box office. Cowabungled, dude.

movie looks great, like someone perfectly brought the cartoon into real life, but that is where most of the praise ends. The story is awkward, the action is boring, and some characters make such silly choices that it feels like the visuals were doing all the hard work.
