Critics Consensus

Neither entertaining enough to recommend nor remarkably awful, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles may bear the distinction of being the dullest movie ever made about talking bipedal reptiles.

Shadow and Act Staff Shadow and Act I can’t think of a recent blockbuster that’s been raked across the coals as much as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Sep 15, 2022 Full Review Peter Hartlaub San Francisco Chronicle The whole "TMNT" movie is over-inflated; like watching an otherwise tolerable music video, stretched out to 101 minutes. Rated: 1/4 Mar 20, 2020 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times A shockingly boring, endlessly unimaginative advertisement for pizza, soft drinks and the capitalist ideal. Rated: 1/5 Mar 20, 2020 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film This version of TMNT doesn’t quite have the heart or development that keeps you as engaged or entertained throughout. It does some parts well but mostly it falls flat. Rated: D+ Aug 19, 2024 Full Review Benjamín Harguindey EscribiendoCine The way the turtles relate to their past, their father, and the villain of the movie, in such an improbable way that it seems forced -- even for a comic. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/10 Aug 15, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Indeed, motion capture and a push toward photo-real animation result in rather gross heroes (with nostrils), particularly in the case of Splinter, whose slimy quality incites some latent Bubonic anxiety. Cameron L This reboot of the turtles franchise has gone downhill really fast with Michael Bay’s name attached to the movie and the screenplay is so bad. I can’t understand anyone liking it. Megan Fox is not a good actress at all, the turtles are hideously CGI, which is worse than the turtles in Turtles 3 and the characters are just flat out, dull and unlikable, all of them, and I forgotten about Raphael‘s forced moral at the end of the movie Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review william s Against my better judgement, I might defend this film slightly. While it's not very good, I don't think it was that far off from being.... actually OK. For one, they should have decided if they wanted to target single digit aged kids or teenagers. The turtles, and their humor, seem geared for grade schoolers. But the rest of the movie drags this into PG-13 territory, which feels like a mistake. The CGI and action also feels cluttered/messy. But that isn't exactly shocking when you are talking about something under the Michael Bay umbrella. But, I always got the vibe that the films heart was in the right place. Trying it's best to provide thrills, humor, and generally be entertaining... even if it didn't all land. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Vitor Felipe A É um filme bom,um CGI inpecavel,no geral acho um otimo filme Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Jelisije J This adaption to the turtles whether its their look, their origins, or the story its all falls flat.........a definite skip and it never existed. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Miles F Could be better. Funny though. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/14/25 Full Review Audience Member I actually read the junior novelization before I saw the movie. The book was fun, but the movie..... well, I haven't seen TMNT 3 yet, but after seeing this movie I thought that it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't good. I liked the elevator scene and the avalanche scene. My advice is that if they had just read the comics and watch the shows, the movie could have been much better. I really liked the brotherly bonds from the turtles it was fun, but I wanted to see more. All in all, by my opinion, I thought it wasn't a bad movie, but not a good movie either.
