Audience Member The problem with Dwuanne Luckow is, at first glance, he does not look or sound crazy. He is clean-shaven, neat, and speaks with confidence. As this documentary progresses, you begin to see how this fact does not serve him well. This is his sister's documentary, and the story she tells is a travesty. I don't want to share many details from the film, as watching it is a cumulative educational experience. Scene by scene, Ms. Luckow builds a narrative about the mentally ill in America, and the families who want to help their mentally ill loved ones. This is her story, so the conclusion she reaches may not be acceptable to everyone. Troubling, intelligent, infuriating. Sep 12, 2019 Full Review Frank Scheck Hollywood Reporter That Way Madness Lies delivers an unblinking assessment of the failures of the health, judicial and penal systems to effectively address what is a growing national problem. Dec 19, 2018 Full Review Michael Rechtshaffen Los Angeles Times Luckow, whose film takes its title from "King Lear," ultimately finds not so much in the way of closure as she does a vital shred of self-preservation. Dec 13, 2018 Full Review Louis Proyect Counterpunch.org A courageous and compelling documentary about how American society casts the mentally ill and their families adrift.
