Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/23 Full Review Audience Member "The Greening of Southie" offers a great step-by-step, piece-by-piece look at what goes into "green construction" and LEED Certification. To be honest, I thought the movie would be dull, since the subject (construction) is something that annoys--rather than fascinates--me during my daily commute, but the filmmakers manage to truly make this an interesting (and sometimes, very tense and dramatic) story. The engineers and project managers have the best intentions as they create this "green" building, but they can't predict how all of the elements--from environmentally friendly glues, to bamboo floorboards, to wheat-pulp cabinets--will interact or hold up. Quite a bit goes wrong. More engaging, though, are the questions that this film poses about the process of green construction. Though we are saving forests by utilizing bamboo for flooring, are we wasting fuel by shipping it from Asia? Are all of the materials and measures for LEED Certification truly helping our environment in the long run, or do they simply sound nice in a brochure? And perhaps most interesting is the economic disparity between the working-class construction workers who construct and marvel at the building, and the wealthy elite who are able to actually afford the trend of "going green." "The Greening of Southie" hasn't received much press, and is only airing on Sundance right now, but it's definitely an engaging look at an entire industry, and it gives us a glimpse of the cultural impact of green construction, too.
