Jack Moffitt Esquire Magazine This picture restores Ann Sheridan to the top ranks of stardom and promotes Zachary Scott from the ranks of villainy to an important place among leading men. Alain E I am totally enthusiastic about this. I have not seen The Letter, which apparently this movie is a remake of. Nonetheless, here we have a clever script because if you don’t know the story you don’t anticipate what is happening. The three leads are very strong. Excellent black and white photography and I cannot describe my satisfaction that they completely avoided the ridiculous exaggerated shadows that plagued the movies of that period. Ann Sheridan is very elegant and I have not seen before the thing she does with the pearl necklace that keeps it mostly under the collar of her dress. The character of their lawyer friend gives in the end a very nice speech about forgiving each other and continue with their marriage, despite the episode referenced in the title. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/29/25 Full Review Steve D Poor man's the Letter with some good acting. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/24 Full Review deke p 1947 wife who 'made a mistake'. EVE ARDEN! + 3 Stars I've with familiar names that I've never really known by face: Ann Sheridan very gluckin & likable,+ Lew Ayres & Zachary Scott (who I've always confused name with the great Randolph Scott. I liked the movie. Never heard of before saw on THE MOVIE CHANNEL 3.4.2021. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Under appreciated film about infidelity and the importance of forgiveness. The storyline is wrapped around a murder investigation and, unfortunately, the police procedural scenes are bad. But, excellent performances by the leads and a storyline that constantly moves forward makes this worthwhile. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member THE UNFAITHFUL is a very tepid remake or sort of spin on THE LETTER. But if you strip out Maughn's repressed sexuality what do you have? Not much. Though Eve Arden has one amazing moment that actually makes this film an interesting time machine.
