Dave S The Schobers, an Austrian family of three, live mundane lives, apparently consumed by the repetitive nature of their daily existence and deadened by the consumer culture in which they live. As time passes over a period of three years, they realize that there is only one viable option – escape. Made early in the career of director Michael Haneke, The Seventh Continent set the table for what was to come, both stylistically and thematically. Filled with stark images, countless cuts to black, uncomfortably long takes, stunted dialogue, and familiar Haneke themes, it's a movie that will be appreciated by many, reviled by an equal number, and forgotten by none.
