A young Georgian man named Lado is involved in smuggling antique furniture from Georgia to Russia. Tired of his immaturity, Medea, Lado’s girlfriend, buys for herself the apartment in St. Peterburg’s historic center. It is sold at a very low price because the apartment comes with its owner, Vadim Vadimich - an opinionated, old-fashioned character. At the time of the unlawful deportation of thousands of Georgians from Russia, Lado is caught and deported. The antique warehouse is raided, while Medea hides in a wardrobe.

moves at its own pace, which may be slow for some, but its depiction of Russian life in 2006 is reason to watch. In a film that is heavier on images than words, Valdimir Vadimich is astounding; his quiet performance is sheer beauty.

**The Antique** is a quiet, deeply human drama that turns displacement into a meditation on loneliness, identity, and the meaning of home. Rusudan Glurjidze makes strong use of wintery St. Petersburg, intimate compositions, silence, and the old apartment to reflect the emotional isolation of her characters. The film’s greatest strength is the relationship between Vadim and Medea, as their gradual connection reveals how differently people respond to loss and displacement. Its deliberately slow pace and heavy reliance on contemplation may test the patience of some viewers, and a few of its ideas could have been handled with greater impact. Still, **The Antique** is a thoughtful and visually striking drama whose emotional power comes less from its political backdrop than from its portrait of people searching for warmth in a world that feels increasingly cold.
