GI S Minnie is quite the trouble maker in The Barn Dance. When both Mickey and Pete show up to pick her up, she opts to ride in Pete's car, rather than Mickey's horse carriage. When the car immediately falls apart, it's Mickey's chance to give her a ride and steal a few kisses. At the dance Mickey's evergrowing clog shoes trample poor Minnie so Pete gets to step in with some fresh dance moves. Mickey uses a party balloon to become light as a feather and cut in on Pete's action, but our hero Pete pops the balloon with a MacGuyver-esque crafted slingshot. Yet another short where Pete is the good guy. Mickey continues his tirade of abusing animals for his own benefit honking a duck as a cheap horn and strangling his horse because it interrupted M&M's makeout session. The crank returns again this time being used to start Pete's car. The parrot from Steamboat Willie returns to yell at Mickey and thankfully comes to no harm. Fave gag is a surreal moment after Mickey has completely stomped Minnie's leg, she ties the stretched out portion of her leg into a bow and cuts off the extra length. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/01/25 Full Review Teddy B Charming and roughly entertaining enough placed within a situation where Mickey actually gets the short end of the stick. The faults in this film come out through its sound design (but I can't very much blame them in 1929) and the failure of Disney+ to give it a proper restoration. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/24 Full Review Vitoria F I think the highlight of this Mickey short film are the visual metaphors. It is also notable for Minnie's personality presented as a frivolous girl and Pete's romantic interest, something that would later be left aside, thankfully.
