Critics Consensus

A grim, gritty, and gripping super-noir, The Batman ranks among the Dark Knight's bleakest -- and most thrillingly ambitious -- live-action outings.

Audience Says

It's long, but The Batman looks and sounds great, and its grounded take on Gotham is a solid fit for this Caped Crusader.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk The film creates an alluring combination of the familiar and the fresh. Rated: 4/5 Sep 19, 2024 Full Review Candice Frederick Huffington Post “The Batman” reaches for an ingenious and compelling new way to tell a story about the thin lines between corruption, greed and nobility — but ever so limply and always just out of its grasp. Dec 6, 2022 Full Review Keith Uhlich (All (Parentheses)) The film I imagine Ricky Fitts would grow up to make after the events of 'American Beauty.' Mar 24, 2022 Full Review Denise Pieniazek Puesta en Escena (AR) "The Batman" has a somber tone different from previous versions that, due to its enunciation, bring it closer to the style of the Film-Noir film genre, returning to the original style of the comic strip and its proximity to pulp literature. Rated: 7/10 Aug 18, 2024 Full Review Brittany Patrice Witherspoon Pop Culture Reviews When it’s all said and done, The Batman is good—not great. From technical and narrative standpoints, there are both gaps and achievements. Rated: 3/5 Jul 22, 2024 Full Review Connor Lightbody Live & Breathe Media (Substack) For a film set deep in the depths of Gotham’s gritty underbelly, the script slowly descends into the chaotic silliness of the characters that it feels so desperate to shed Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 18, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Michael The terrible portrayal of Bruce Wayne was enough to ruin the movie, but beyond that it’s a boring movie Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/22/24 Full Review Luis could be a bit shorter Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/09/24 Full Review Erin C With the new Penguin series wrapping, I was compelled to re-watch The Batman by Matt Reeves. To my chagrin it became clearer by the minute. This movie was another product of over hype and mass marketing, but the substance that makes a film great is sorely lacking. It’s almost laughable how bad the script and some of the scenes are. Batman is quite literally the worst detective in Gotham, who apparently doesn’t understand… Spanish. I can’t make this up. It’s clear aside from actor pay the funds were spent on decently cool CGI scenes but none that are worthy of holding the jock of Nolan. Anyways this movie is painful to get through. It’s the worst Batman movie maybe ever it really makes you wonder a few things. Where is the money going? The time and money spent to make a movie this big and this bad are stifling. Secondly is rotten tomatoes filled with bots? I haven’t talked to a single person who thought this was a good movie. This movie does not get better with time in fact it gets a whole lot worse. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/05/24 Full Review Travis B Best Batman Movie... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/02/24 Full Review Glumpy I love this movie. A true Batman detective film. Watching Bruce mature into be the Batman. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Audience Member Batman is a detective again and thats a good thing. The atmosphere was great in this movie. Paul Dano does a great job as the Riddler and Pattinson feels the most like a young Batman compared to previous iterations. Reeves did an amazing job making this more of a thriller/mystery instead of an action movie. The only parts of the movie that I didn't think were great was Selina Kyle's storyline. They felt like an afterthought and it seemed forced into an otherwise already interesting plot. This movie almost lost a star from me for a throwaway line from her at the end, which felt completely unnecessary. I hope Reeves and Pattinson make a trilogy set in this world.
