      The Beguiled

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Beguiled adds just enough extra depth to its source material to set itself apart, and director Sofia Coppola's restrained touch is enlivened by strong performances from the cast.

Jordan B The solid acting from the excellent cast assembled for this film is unable to save it from itself. There is a clear line of ridiculousness that is crossed, despite the naivete of both the characters and the time period. There are moments where you can't help but think to yourself 'Really? She's obviously smart, but she's so desperate for love that she's falling for this nonsense?'. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/03/24 Full Review mogan d Horribly boring story.. it had so much potential too... I dont understand the hype with Sophia Coppola Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review T.W. B A subpar remake what can you expect from a rich playgirl who bought her way into Hollywood Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/24 Full Review Desi a such a good movie!!!! <3 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/12/23 Full Review Tera K The original 1971 version of this film was great and can't be remade in my opinion, but I still entered this experience with a clean slate and I'm sorry to say that I was unimpressed. Sofia Coppola is capable of beautiful work ("Marie Antoinette" and "The Virgin Suicides"), however this film was so dark and lit so poorly that I could not tell what was going on no matter how I adjusted my TV. I thought it was just me at first, then I read other reviews saying the same thing and I can't believe it was even approved. I don't like to leave negative reviews, but the people involved need to do better because a film lit this poorly is unacceptable. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/13/23 Full Review Gareth v The trademark Sofia Coppola production values are there, but some of acting is a letdown as is the story at times. Raphael Abraham Financial Times Coppola has inverted the old order of sexploitation and Farrell has been reduced to a sex object. He just looks like a very happy one. Rated: 4/5 Oct 11, 2017 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com The Beguiled is well worth seeing but it's also just as worthy of being taken to task for its shortcomings. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 22, 2017 Full Review Valerie Complex Odyssey The Beguiled has a strong story to tell. Unfortunately, it's too wrapped up in Sofia Coppola's naïveté and hubris to be anything more. Rated: C- Jul 18, 2017 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Methodically and dastardly, the film wishes to seduce us with a heightened intrigue of challenged sexual repression. Rated: 3/5 Feb 16, 2024 Full Review Benedict Seal Vague Visages The Beguiled plays out exactly as one might expect and never really stretches beyond its contained premise. That being said, Coppola makes full use of the scenario in terms of feminist commentary and critique, and the film looks genuinely stunning.
