Louis Clyde Stoumen's Oscar-winning documentary feature combines World War II newsreel footage with an adaptation of the European folk tale Reynard the Fox, illustrated by old-fashioned woodcuts. The narration by actress Marlene Dietrich draws parallels between the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler and the cunning, treacherous trickster figure of the fable. The film also includes graphic footage taken during and after the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps.

Audience Member Marlene Dietrich narrates this documentary about the rise of Hitler and the Third Reich, comparing Hitler's ascension to a fable about a fox. If Hotel Terminus explodes the Nazis and WWII into all its complexities, this film does the polar opposite, reducing political rises to sophomoric fairy tales. It's a metaphor that gets tired after ten minutes but stretches for interminable an hour and a half. Overall, while Hotel Terminus may have been overkill in its rendering of WWII's complexities, this is overkill in simplicity, which is a far greater crime. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Although it must have seemed very revealing to an audience that lived through the events of World War II only twenty years before (it did win an Academy Award), to modern viewers it will not seem very comprehensive, given subsequent documentaries like the 'World At War', and 24-hour cable history channels - in fact, the facts of Hitler's rise to power seem only glossed over, and are needless juxtaposed against a telling of Goethe's fable 'Reynard the Fox', which adds very little value to the horrible events, in spite of its uniqueness as a framing device. Too much emphasis on developing mythological metaphors for Hitler's pathology. Narration by Marlene Dietrich is a plus however. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews
