I think the movie is, first and best, a thrilling entertainment that starts by being funny and ends by being very deeply moving. But I also think it reflects an attitude about Vietnam that wouldn't have been possible in a war movie of the early 1940s. Go to Full Review

Sidney J. Furie has opted for a combination of sentimentalism with cynicism and the elements are like oil and vinegar: never flirting and they drag along the film until an ending taken straight from the finale of M.A.S.H. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

The movie isn't really terrible, it just seems to be inspired by other movies about other wars. Go to Full Review

See more George M @Milkyway Apr 1, 2025 A damn good movie with a bit of an uneven ending, it's worth seeing for the performance of R. Lee Ermy, years before the overrated Full Metal Jacket (which I only watch for the Boot Camp scenes). A fine cast and a good look at the ridiculous misery of Viet Nam, caused by an overconfident US Government, who should have told France to take a flying leap and remained out of Vietnam. See more Alberto G @RT07548651 Dec 19, 2024 I had enlisted into the Marines the same year, I watched the movie right before I left to boot camp to set expectations. It scared me straight but it was too late. See more Bruce M @RT07502106 Aug 20, 2023 I SEEN THE MOVIE AT THE RIVIARA THEATRE WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT. VERY GOOD! See more Oct 3, 2020 One of the first vietnam films and one of the very best, criminally overlooked in 1978. First saw it in 1980 when I was 14 and it made a big impact on me for the well acted depth of the characters and forthright direction. Just saw a couple of clips on youtube and they are still very good. Should be seen. See more Apr 21, 2016 the original full metal jacket See more Read all reviews
