Dennis Harvey Variety Sturm draws on a rich array of material to assemble a first documentary feature that's fascinating on numerous levels. Dec 8, 2016 Full Review Jonathan Kiefer SF Weekly Sturm's The Cult of JT LeRoy offers a sober yet somewhat punch-drunk reminder of what it felt like when the local literary wunderkind with a disturbingly tragic past was shown to possess an even more disturbingly tragic future. Jan 1, 2016 Full Review Brian Lynch Georgia Straight It will leave you wondering how deeply what you know is conditioned by what you want to know. Aug 25, 2015 Full Review Anita Katz San Francisco Examiner Sturm is an efficient storyteller, and she has assembled a cast of informative, engaging interviewees -- writers, agents, filmmakers -- whose stories convincingly bear out her view of Albert as a con artist who preyed on people's emotions. Rated: 3/4 Mar 13, 2015 Full Review Matthew Sorrento Film International The story of JT LeRoy, a wunderkind writer who proved to be a hoax persona fashioned by Laura Albert, capitalized on [America's] need to weep and, simultaneously, encapsulated the trend. Rated: 9/10 Dec 22, 2014 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Sadly ridiculous. This anti-feminist Sturm doesn't believe it's okay for an author to use a pseudonym. What's sad is not that a couple of rich a-holes got embarrassed, but that a great writer like Albert may have not even gotten the praise she deserved, at least not as soon as she did, without taking on a persona. This speaks volumes about the sexism still permeating our society. For Ms. Sturm, as George Eliot (Mary Anne Evans) once said, "Gossip is a sort of smoke that comes from the dirty tobacco-pipes of of those who diffuse it: it proves nothing but the bad taste of the smoker."
