Critics Consensus

The Devil All the Time's descent into darkness can be harrowing to the point of punishment, but it's offset by strong work from a stellar cast.

Robbie Collin Daily Telegraph (UK) Fiendishly gripping... Rated: 4/5 Nov 22, 2020 Full Review K. Austin Collins Rolling Stone The Devil All the Time has the pretensions of a mythopoetic story that's chipping away at a community's dark underbelly. But here the misery is as belly-up and eager to be noticed as a house cat or a dead fish. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 23, 2020 Full Review Cody Corrall Chicago Reader There are instances of heart and significance scattered throughout the film, but it too often gives into its wandering nature and stops itself from ever making a lasting impression. Rated: 2/4 Oct 7, 2020 Full Review Sarah Vincent Sarah G Vincent Views please do not do a flashback of a scene that I already saw moments ago. A quick flash to remind us of what happened earlier is fine, but rewatching the entire scene feels repetitive and monotonous. It is not as if the scene was that good the first time Jun 15, 2024 Full Review Amy Smith InSession Film I love the final product we got and with the incredible cast performances, compelling story, and the dark tone that lingered throughout the long-yet-warranted screen time, this is a film that has stuck with me since I first saw it. Mar 1, 2024 Full Review Serena Seghedoni Loud and Clear Reviews Tom Holland and an all-star cast shine in The Devil All The Time, a midwestern gothic crime drama whose well-crafted, meaningful ending makes up for a confused narrative structure. Audience Member Entertaining and well acted throughout, but the screenplay is just dissapointing. The purposeless narration kills any real tension for most of the movie, only saying what's happening or whats about to happen. Nothing is really left to interpretation because of the hand-fisted script and lack of inspired shot composition/visual storytelling. On a positive note, the dog on the cross was a phenomenal use of gross-out horror, (and was set up pretty well) that I appreciated the film not overly indulging in. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/17/25 Full Review Federico F Awesome movie , loved it from the beggining to the end , 2hrs and 20 minutos of great actors and scenes . Great story . Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/09/25 Full Review Kevin M I grew up one hill over from Knockemstiff. I didn't expect an accurate depiction of the place so it was easy to just enjoy the movie. It's grim to be sure and the acting is what you would expect from big city folks pretending to be from the backwoods but it'll hold your interest. I would probably give it 3 stars but hey, it's the only movie that even mentions Knockemstiff so I'll give it 4 stars just for personal bias. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/04/25 Full Review Tom M While flitting all over the place this kept up the interest. It follows several stories, all intertwined and goes back and forth in time. It is gripping and very well acted. The devil is present and you've got to watch him...sometimes he comes in disguise...sometimes he plays with your mind...sometimes he leads you astray Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/03/25 Full Review Ray L One of my favorite all time movies Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/24/25 Full Review Marsh X A dark and morbid movie with occasional funny lines based on the religion of Christianity set in 1945 to the 60s, where civilians and preachers are corrupt. This isn't usually the type of movie I watch but I found it interesting for what it's worth, definitely not for the faint hearted as there is some disturbing content that may upset some people but I think it's a decent movie, not the greatest thing I've seen of course but it was alright. 6/10 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
