A look at what religion is capable of when put in the hands of just regular, ignorant, isolated, superstitious folks and the snake oil salesmen who lead them. The brilliant cast speaks truth in the author's narrative. Not for the weak-hearted or the weak-minded. Daring film making. Half a star held back bc, for some, the darkness is soul wrenching. See more Daniel M @DanmartinsWLC Dec 21 The Devil All The Time aims to be a dark drama about violence, trauma, and religious hypocrisy in rural postwar America, but it confuses depth with constant degradation. The fragmented narrative piles up tragedies in a forced way, burying Arvin Russell's arc under excesses that generate more weariness than empathy. Violence ceases to be a dramatic consequence and becomes a crutch for the script. The biggest problem lies in the characters, constructed as grotesque caricatures. They are not realistic. Pastors and religious leaders appear almost exclusively as madmen, fanatics, abusers, or one-dimensional villains, without any psychological nuance or verisimilitude. The film eliminates distinctions between sincere faith, cultural religiosity, and spiritual abuse, treating religion as a direct cause of human brutality. All of this impoverishes both the drama and the social commentary. Instead of provoking reflection, it delivers automatic revulsion. See more Hannah C @Crawfordh Dec 8 Absolute shit movie. But ultimately it works, because like a fable the point is to tell a moralizing tale. Here about the legacy of violence and trauma brought back from war and the desperation and poverty that keep people trapped in these cycles across generations. For decades, Hollywood has been on a mission to portray christians as being crazy and anyone who confesses Jesus as their Savior, unhinged lunatics. Ain't it funny how they never do the same with Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism or Judaism? They never dare mock Muhammad. Only Jesus. Must be a coincidence!
