Critics Consensus

The Devil All the Time's descent into darkness can be harrowing to the point of punishment, but it's offset by strong work from a stellar cast.

Robbie Collin Daily Telegraph (UK) Fiendishly gripping... Rated: 4/5 Nov 22, 2020 Full Review K. Austin Collins Rolling Stone The Devil All the Time has the pretensions of a mythopoetic story that's chipping away at a community's dark underbelly. But here the misery is as belly-up and eager to be noticed as a house cat or a dead fish. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 23, 2020 Full Review Cody Corrall Chicago Reader There are instances of heart and significance scattered throughout the film, but it too often gives into its wandering nature and stops itself from ever making a lasting impression. Rated: 2/4 Oct 7, 2020 Full Review Sarah Vincent Sarah G Vincent Views please do not do a flashback of a scene that I already saw moments ago. A quick flash to remind us of what happened earlier is fine, but rewatching the entire scene feels repetitive and monotonous. It is not as if the scene was that good the first time Jun 15, 2024 Full Review Amy Smith InSession Film I love the final product we got and with the incredible cast performances, compelling story, and the dark tone that lingered throughout the long-yet-warranted screen time, this is a film that has stuck with me since I first saw it. Mar 1, 2024 Full Review Serena Seghedoni Loud and Clear Reviews Tom Holland and an all-star cast shine in The Devil All The Time, a midwestern gothic crime drama whose well-crafted, meaningful ending makes up for a confused narrative structure. SkyRo P "The Devil All the Time" features Tom Holland in a film that has garnered attention following his success as Spider-Man. With the buzz surrounding him, many were eager to see what else he could bring to the screen. Unfortunately, this movie fell flat and was a significant disappointment. The film feels disjointed and heavy-handed, as if it was hastily assembled just to capitalize on star power rather than offering a cohesive story. Released directly on streaming, it didn’t generate much buzz and ended up attracting negative reviews instead. From poor writing to lackluster direction, the film portrays its characters as unrealistic and often clueless. Without any substantial character development, it’s difficult to connect with or care about their journeys. Instead of being engrossed in the story, viewers are left waiting for the film to conclude. This is definitely one of those movies where the fast-forward button becomes your best friend. It’s a blessing that it didn’t hit theaters, where you would have to endure it in real time. Watching at home allows you the option to skip ahead, which I found myself wishing to do frequently. I cannot recommend this film. It does a disservice not only to Tom Holland but also to the impressive cast that includes Bill Skarsgård, Sebastian Stan, Robert Pattinson, and Riley Keough, among others. Despite the talent involved, the final product is disappointing and hard to watch. If you find enjoyment in it, more power to you, but I personally believe it’s not worth the time to watch. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review Dean S Stumbled onto this one while scrolling Netflix, and was taken in by the cast. Beautiful movie that's hard to watch at times, but totally engrossing throughout the multiple storylines, connected by the two small towns. Holland is brilliant, but the other characters ate up scenes as well. Highly recommended for those looking for a movie that challenges the norm. I sense that most of the negative comments are from Christians - who are definitely presented here in a negative (truthful?) light. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review Jake Y Awesome cast and great acting but no discernable plot. It felt like the main objective was to shock the viewer with horrible events over and over and over. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/23/24 Full Review Paulo M One of the best, most intense movies I've ever seen Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review Pedro Henrique C The Devil All the Time is a film with a slow and lazy script, there are times when you stop watching this film to watch any nonsense on the internet. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review Michael T One of them hidden gems that you occasionally come across on streaming apps, this one follows the life of Arvin Russell as he traverses the murky waters that life throws at him Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
