Joe Friar Fort Worth Report Southern Gothic horror musical? You bet. Lin-Manuel Miranda meets Mumford & Sons with a dash of Tarantino. The songs are very good. Rated: 3/4 Feb 22, 2025 Full Review John Townsend Starburst The finale is somewhat of an issue with things being tied up a little too neatly for a potential follow-up. But embrace the craziness, gorge on the graphic novel-style violence, and sing along with the power anthems, and you may not even notice! Rated: 3/5 Feb 11, 2025 Full Review Josh Bell Crooked Marquee The unwieldy, long-winded result is equal parts bold and messy. Rated: B- Feb 4, 2025 Full Review Douglas Davidson Elements of Madness ... not only find[s] harmony in what might seem like a discordant mix of genres, he provides a fully-formed world to explore that asks big questions about the soul, family, and redemption while looking straight into the dark parts of the American South. VJ C The singing voices were the only thing that was good about this movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review Enchancia L One of the cringiest movies I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching. I’ll put it this way, I have NEVER written a review about any movie or show in my life *up until now.* It was so bad that I felt it was my civic duty to warn others of this embarrassing waste of time, so here it goes: Corny songs; the dialogue is rife with overplayed cliches and tiresome tropes of the American south. Not one of the actors playing the three brothers could do a southern accent. In fact, it was so bad we all thought they were making some sort of wacky, Weird Al-style parody musical, in which they were trying to poke fun at the South. Hell, it would have made a lot more sense if that was the case, but unfortunately these people were serious when they made this flaming pile of garbage. I can’t believe people are insulting Tarantino and the Cohen Brothers by comparing this piece of sh*t to the works of such legends. ***Do not believe these reviews!*** It’s clear the official Rotten Tomatoes critics were paid for their stamp of approval, while the vast majority of the user critic reviews are clearly AI generated, likely made by bots that their PR team or production company paid for. Don’t waste your time people. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Tony B Couldn't make it past the first 15 minutes. Not my cup of tea at all. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/06/25 Full Review Kelvin W Cheesy Broadway acting musical with dark and serious themes. Songs are good. Nothing is believable about this movie, or badass. Bursting into song randomly while killing people. Annoying fake accents. Lots of religious misinformation. Lots of close up shots to the actors faces they left me wanting more from the shots. Very Hollywood left, satirical of the genre, out of touch, patty cake. Amusing dialogue. Actors have zero grit. An interesting, annoying, creative watch. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/05/25 Full Review xqy 1 Modern day Pilgrim's Progress - allegory with multiple interpretations, three brothers must reconcile with father, original sin, meaning, life and death (harkens to The Brothers Karamazov) with enchanting cinematography of backwaters and touching blues numbers throughout Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/04/25 Full Review Sara Y While there are recognizable elements here - Southern Gothic folklore, Tarantino-esque violence, Faustian bargains, a musical - mashing them up means this indie film provides that thing everyone says they're clamoring for in movies: something new. It's a helluva ride in a heightened universe, with fantastic performances and a soundtrack you'll want to download immediately. You've never seen anything like it.
