David W It's a hugely hammy, over the top yet decidedly low budget Rosemary's baby, Omen and Exorcist hybrid. The direction by Peter Sasdy is surprisingly poor as he's done much better and the general quality of the acting is far from stellar. It's all very much intended as a Joan Collins vehicle but hardly shows her acting in the best light. The great Donald Pleasence phones in a turn to add some much needed acting gravitas to proceedings and also stars Ralph Bates (sporting one of the most ridiculous Italian accents ever committed to film) and the stunningly beautiful Caroline Munroe who is bizarrely over dubbed with a voice that is totally inappropriate. It's cheesy, often unintentionally hilarious and obviously done on a shoe string yet somehow I found it all very watchable despite not being remotely in the same league as the films that 'inspired' it. Strangly the film has a number of alternative titles such as 'I don't want to be born', 'The Monster', 'The Devil Within Her' and most tellingly given its obvious heavy influences, 'Sharon's Baby'. The alternative Sharon's baby title always made me laugh as not only does it definitively flag what it's ripping off but there's no character in the film actually called Sharon.. :) There's also a sort of adult movie vibe to the soundtrack which is hugely out of context, some topless strip club moments thrown in which seem totally gratuitous, Play School legend Floella Benjamin and a killer dwarf.. . One for the decidedly low budget, short shoot time, 'B' horror movie afficionado or those feeling forgiving and in the need for some questionably acted retro cheese. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/25 Full Review Audience Member Excruciatingly bad Omen/Exorcist/Rosemary's Baby clone, very badly directed by Peter Sasdy and stuffed with career-worst performances by Joan Collins, Eileen Atkins and (particularly) Ralph Bates as an oleaginous Italian married to Collins, whose inability to park a car is featured several times. Donald Pleasence cashes his cheque shamelessly. Diabolical in every sense. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Embarrassing "Rosemary's Baby" and "Exorcist" rip off that is so bad I actually questioned myself at a few points if the film was intentional camp. Joan Collins plays a new mother, but her baby is possessed by an evil spirit because of a dwarf whom she had wronged in the past had cursed the child. I suppose that was a Rumpelstiltskin sort of thing. Luckily for Collins her sister, Eileen Atkins, is a nun and takes on the exorcism duties. Ralph Bates, Donald Pleasence, and Caroline Munro are also along for this embarrassing ride. The film went through several that beside "The Devil Within Her" included "Sharon's Baby," "I Don't Want to Be Born," and "The Monster." This film is only worth watching as an example of bad cinema or for ironic enjoyment. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Made me laugh.. loved to watch it to see how bad it is. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member The cheesier the better. 70's giving me another quirky little film to add to my collection. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Okay, strap in for this one, because it gets pretty silly/hectic as things go along... Joan Collins is a stripper who ignores the affections of a dwarf (never a good thing to do) and finds herself cursed by him, so when she and her new hubby have a child, the baby is a puzzlingly violent creature that attacks everyone who gets near it, making mom's life an especially hellish experience. She eventually turns to her nun sister for help, but it may already be too late... Silly fun from the '70s, and the alternate title of 'Sharon's Baby' is especially puzzling, as there's no one in the film named Sharon?!? Rental.
