What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Dirt celebrates the rude debauchery that Mötley Crüe's fans enjoy -- but does so with the dispiriting lack of substance that the group's critics have long decried.

Jamie Ludwig Chicago Reader Even Airheads, the 1994 comedy that spoofed Sunset Strip hard-rock culture, had a more gripping storyline and emotional arc (and certainly more laughs) than this tale of a real band that helped define that scene. Feb 21, 2020 Full Review Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's very regressive in its politics. Sep 24, 2019 Full Review David Fear Rolling Stone This is rock bad-boy lore as a rocking bore, an endless parade of recreated afterparty ecstasy and emptiness that robs The Dirt of the vicarious thrill it had on the page. Rated: 2/5 Mar 25, 2019 Full Review Kenneth Seward Jr. IGN Movies Netflix’s The Dirt won’t win any awards nor will it inspire any would-be musicians, but it is entertaining and offers up a compelling story about Mötley Crüe. Rated: 7.8/10 Jul 26, 2023 Full Review Lonita Cook KCTV5 News at 9 The material is pretty gratuitous. Sep 30, 2021 Full Review Dan Stubbs NME (New Musical Express) Forget passing the Bechdel test, this wouldn't even pass a literacy test... Rated: 1/5 Jun 17, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Petros T It does have its fair share of inaccuracies and seems to have taken the liberty to approach the real-life material in a manner that makes it all look scripted, carefully calculated and even cliched, nevertheless it's an engaging movie that succeeds in depicting the excess and debauchery as it goes from amusing and exciting to stomach-churning and tragic. Unsurprisingly, however, it glosses over the next twenty years, and that deprives it of a chance at a powerful closure that would linger on. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/19/24 Full Review Jeffrey P Never was a big Motley Crue fan, their music never moved me. It’s what one would expect from a rock star movie about any of the 80's hair bands. It’s more about the abuse and debauchery than the music, nothing truly innovative or surprising here. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/28/24 Full Review Austen M I thought It was a very entertaining movie that painted a decent picture of what the band was like. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/11/24 Full Review Vanja M The best movie ever for me. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Dani G A biopic doing homage in the very best ways of the band, and letting us know something about them with a good rhytm story Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review Aylena M I absolutely loved this movie Describes what Motley Crue was like, and if you don't like that, this movie isn't for you Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/09/24 Full Review Read all reviews
