Critics Consensus

The Dirt celebrates the rude debauchery that Mötley Crüe's fans enjoy -- but does so with the dispiriting lack of substance that the group's critics have long decried.

Even Airheads, the 1994 comedy that spoofed Sunset Strip hard-rock culture, had a more gripping storyline and emotional arc (and certainly more laughs) than this tale of a real band that helped define that scene. Go to Full Review

This is rock bad-boy lore as a rocking bore, an endless parade of recreated afterparty ecstasy and emptiness that robs The Dirt of the vicarious thrill it had on the page. Go to Full Review

The Dirt had moments which will startle you to the core and I appreciate the filmmaker for keeping it real. But, narratively the movie was a huge disappointment as I’m never really invested throughout the runtime. Go to Full Review

Netflix’s The Dirt won’t win any awards nor will it inspire any would-be musicians, but it is entertaining and offers up a compelling story about Mötley Crüe. Go to Full Review

See more Alexander S Oct 20 For fans of Mötley Crüe, The Dirt is an absolute kickstart, offering a behind-the-scenes style story of the band's journey to stardom. The actors' portrayals are impressively accurate, making the film feel like a nostalgic trip back in time. However, it's worth noting that the film's appeal might be limited to fans of the band, as others might find it a bit too eccentric and disjointed. But as a fan, the film was bonkers and it rocked, which totally suits Mötley Crüe. Grading: B See more Janice F May 16 At first it was a little jarring but I get it. It was excess of the 80s. Sex, drug and Rock n roll. But as the story went on, I was really invested. I wanted them to succeed, to tame their dragons and kick their demons. I cried when they cried, laughed when they laughed. I liked the ride. See more Noelle C May 5 Motley Crue becoming a worldwide phenomenon is depressing enough in reality, but having their stories sanitized - the absolute waste and destruction they laid on real women's lives downplayed and erased to make sympathetic on-screen characters - is actually pathetic. It's the same reason Straight Outta Compton was stomach-churning, because too few people will walk away knowing the truth. The average Motley Crue fan is the kind of person who would stalk and threaten women for seeking criminal charges against a famous r*pist just to keep the party going, the reviews on this movie really drive that home. I thought about whipping a bag of diseased s**t at Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee for a long time, and after this movie, Jeff Tremane is catching the smoke too. This movie is a big pile of garbage, horrible acting and story. Worst musical biography I have ever seen. See more Read all reviews
