U.S. Navy pilot Lt. Jake Grafton (Brad Johnson) and his bombardier buddy, Lt. Cmdr. Virgil Cole (Willem Dafoe), are two soldiers embedded in the Vietnam War growing frustrated by the military's constraints on their missions. Despite the best efforts of their commanding officer, Cmdr. Frank Camparelli (Danny Glover), to re-engage them, this disillusioned pair decide to take the war effort into their own hands with an explosive battle plan that could well get them court-martialed.

It's a strangely disconnected movie that leads up to a point, makes it, and then drones on for another 45 minutes in increasingly witless cliches.

Bad, but hard to blame Dafoe for clearing his plate on this meal. It's a rite of passage for pantheon character actors to ply their trade in otherwise puerile war films because they suspect, as Dafoe does here, they can walk away with the whole campaign.

Can’t believe how many people disliked this movie. It was a favorite growing up and probably the entire reason I joined the navy. It has more realism than Top Gun and that was rated higher. Guess military realism means nothing in Hollywood.

This film is a mess that focuses on a bunch of characters that are not really necessary with the overall finished product. Wasted potential is the best description of this film.

Loved it! I recently listened to a podcast interview with a Vietnam veteran A6 bombardier. The interview was very moving. He mentioned that this movie was a mostly-accurate depiction of combat in the A6, so I was interested to see it despite poor reviews. Against that context, the film and story were fantastic. There were some storyline and dialog elements that I thought were very clever and endearing that may have escaped the attention of viewers primarily interested in the action aspect. Without the context, I would say it’s an ok movie for a slow night at home, but considering its purported accuracy, I found it very moving and engaging. I would say it’s definitely worth the time for anyone interested in military aviation history, especially that of the generally overlooked ground-attack role, and especially in the Vietnam war. As a bonus, you get to see baby-faced Willem Dafoe, Danny Glover, Rosanna Arquette, even Ving Rhames early-career!

While some might say that, alot of the movie is cliche or a Top Gun remake; they discount how incredibly accurate the film is. This film comes closer then other movies about Vietnam and how it affected the people involved. I give it 5 stars because this movie highlights U.S. Naval Aviation and honors the sacrifice made by aviators in a realistic way.
