Cary Darling Houston Chronicle What's not to like when there are weapons with such names as malevolent wood, siege tower and wolf teeth striker? When, after an attack is launched, one character matter-of-factly says, "quite intense," audiences will know exactly how he feels. Rated: 4/5 Sep 19, 2018 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine It is visually appealing, packed from top to bottom with action and combat, dressed in appealing costumes, and backed by a stirring soundtrack by Yoon Il-sang. Rated: 8/10 Aug 25, 2019 Full Review William Schwartz HanCinema I loved how brute force is never the answer- trying to shove soldiers into a bottleneck just gets them killed, which is why Emperor Taizong keeps having to regroup the army, to his increasing psychotic agitation. Aug 20, 2019 Full Review Richard Yu Cinema Escapist The Great Battle provides action with sprinklings of light-heartedness, but falls short on screenwriting. May 31, 2019 Full Review Min-sik Yoon Korea Herald To my surprise, director Kim Kwang-sik did a clever job of masking his actors' weak points and making the most of their strengths in this action-packed flick. Jan 9, 2019 Full Review Jeffrey Lyles Lyles' Movie Files Imagine a film featuring multiple Helm's Deep battles and you've got a good idea what's in store. Any of the action sequences would be the final battle in most war films. Rated: 9.5/10 Oct 6, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

deathSONIC One of the best war movies i've seen before Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review Logan D In Goguryeo, a Korean kingdom, the soldiers of Ansi Fortress endeavor to hold the army of the Chinese emperor at bay. Inspired by an actual event. An intense and visually striking period film. It does toss out a lot of accuracy in retelling the story but isn't that what epics are all about? It's a boisterous action flick. Recommended Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/07/24 Full Review Amar T What a great movie to watch. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and will be sure to watch it again. It kept me captivated till the end. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/28/23 Full Review Steve C Cool story bro. Not much is actually known about that Tang emperor or the cause of death. So I guess French copied the Trebuchet and other siege works from the Tang's too? Lots of fictional liberties. Anyways cool piece of fictional entertainment, based on a single line in the Encyclopedia Britannica, that said that the Tang invasion in that place was disastrous. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member The Great Battle (2018 Korean movie streaming currently on Hi-Yah) is a gem of a picture got a very limited US release (at the same time as Venom). It is hard to find , but worth tracking down. This is the Korean version of 300 mixed with Braveheart. What it may lack in historical accuracy it makes up for in style and jaw dropping battles many of which rival the Two Towers. 4 stars out of 5 (some of it is a little over the top) but I can see why many of my film friends give it the full 5 stars. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member I'd be hard pressed to find anything that actually counts as a hindrance in regards to this film. It features a 90 minute siege of a fortress and the action sequences are often times brutal and bloody, but both sides, especially the outclassed defenders, employ clever methods to gain the upper hand, and I'm not just talking about "Let's sneak around the back." This is a war film for both the Action Cinephile and the Thinking Person, as it works on both levels equally. There's also themes and moments of personal sacrifice, and they are effectively moving when they take place, as the rationale behind every one of them is clearly defined. To boot, it features solid acting, excellent makeup and costumes, and the Cinematography and Musical Score are both amazing. Primarily, it's Smart, Intense and both Looks and Sounds incredible. There are certainly weaker aspects, such as many characters not being particularly deep, but you do completely empathize with them as the struggle they endure, in particular during the final moments, is palpable. Overall, it's gripping, intricate and a technical powerhouse, and I recommend it as much as any other movie I can think of from this past decade.
