Although Walt Disney was the public face of the animation studio that bore his name, much of the behind-the-scenes work was done by head animator Ub Iwerks. This biography by Iwerks' granddaughter, filmmaker Leslie Iwerks, details the animator's many contributions to Disney's studio, including creating the first cartoon superstar, Mickey Mouse, and perfecting the process that merges animation and live-action film, which went on to become a staple of Disney's film and TV work.

Audience Member This is a fascinating story that provides a new appreciation for the incredible contributions from this certainly widely unknown talent with an odd name. Ub's contributions go far beyond creating Mickey Mouse. Many significant advances in motion pictures and animation started with him, including the basis for many of today's amazing effects. From Mickey to Hitchcock's "The Birds" to the basis for today's blue screen and 3D effects, Iwerks hand was behind it all. It seems both Disney and Hollywood should do more to honor this man's accomplishments and contributions, lest he be forgotten or overlooked in the public eye like so many other brilliant inventors and artists. This historical documentary will be enjoyed not only by Disney fans, but also by film and film industry historians and technology geeks. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
