What to Know

Critics Consensus

While still slightly hamstrung by "middle chapter" narrative problems and its formidable length, The Desolation of Smaug represents a more confident, exciting second chapter for the Hobbit series.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Jackson managed to do something that I never thought was possible--make me care about a Hobbit tale. He also delivered one of the best cliffhangers of the year. Kudos to that. Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Max Nelson Film Comment Magazine Nearly everyone in the film is creaking under the weight of the past. Jan 14, 2014 Full Review Bruce Diones The New Yorker The tale has no emotional resonance, and the thinness of the plot (only five of the book's chapters are adapted here) and the colorless depictions of the leading characters do it no favors. Dec 30, 2013 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson The continued character development is another perk of the patience of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Just because you have the resources and abilities to do anything with CGI, doesn’t mean you should go crazy with it. I also loved the cliffhanger ending to makes you watch the next one with anticipation one of my favorite movies from one of my favorite books. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/15/25 Full Review Oliver J Critic Consensus: “The Desolation of Smaug” amps up the action and spectacle, but at times the story feels rushed and overcrowded. Despite its uneven pacing, the film delivers breathtaking visuals and an unforgettable dragon that keep the adventure thrilling. Review: The Desolation of Smaug takes Bilbo and the company of dwarves deeper into danger, introducing audiences to the dark wonders of Mirkwood and the fiery majesty of Smaug himself. Benedict Cumberbatch’s vocal performance and motion-capture work for Smaug are nothing short of mesmerizing, creating one of the most memorable cinematic dragons ever. The film shines in its set pieces—the barrel escape, the confrontation with giant spiders, and the tense encounter with Smaug are expertly staged and visually spectacular. Martin Freeman continues to anchor the story as Bilbo, bringing a mix of bravery, wit, and reluctant heroism that grounds the high fantasy action. However, the film’s narrative sometimes feels cluttered, juggling too many characters and subplots, which can dilute the emotional impact. While it successfully ramps up tension and spectacle, it doesn’t quite achieve the cohesion or charm of An Unexpected Journey or the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Verdict: A thrilling, visually stunning adventure that entertains, but occasionally stumbles under its own ambition. Fans will be captivated by the action and Smaug, even if the story feels uneven. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/12/25 Full Review Chief B Haven't read the book but I like this trilogy. And one of the few cgi movies where it benefits the movie. The real landscapes with the cgi is incorporated perfectly having created a beautiful fantasy world. . Also I cared for the characters mainly the dwarves, Bilbo and of course Gandalf. I think it's underrated and has aged very well. Also as usual the book purists making most of the fuss.. It's an adaptation not a page by page copy of the book. I agree it could've been shorter but as usual it's the greedy studio's wanting to make trilogies. The ones that only care about profit ruin the vision of the director and crew most of the time. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/03/25 Full Review Meikel C Yeah, You got it, the movie was so good. Growl, I just can remember that. Crazy, Kili dropped down the stair. James Nesbit looks like Anthony Kiedis. The Ruin Trap is just wow. The CGI is crazy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
