Martijn t It's about a man called Józef going on an Alice in Wonderland-like surrealist journey driven by memories and thoughts that are caused by the death of his father Jakub, a Jewish cloth merchant and ornithologist in current Ukraine. But don't put too much weight on that plot summary; the keyword here is 'surrealist'. This is one of the most dream-like movies I've ever seen. It looks absolutely great, with many wonderful sets and visuals. This is one of those movies where you immediately want to visit the filming locations (if they were not studio set.) Jan Nowicki is also very good as Józef. There were some references to complicated 19th century European (and Mexican) history that went over my head and the movie was slightly too long for me; I've noticed that I can fully engage with this kind of avantgarde movie making for 70 to 90 minutes.
