Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald The movie is seductively pleasurable, for most of its length. Tavernier corrals the emotions and restricts musical embellishment, concentrating on the powerful landscape and Cheval's life within it. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 11, 2019 Full Review Jane Freebury The Canberra Times (Australia) Cheval was seriously inhibited and reclusive, but not entirely. The impression we also get is of someone who would have liked to see the world. Rated: 3/5 Aug 18, 2022 Full Review Paula Arantzazu Ruiz Cinemanía (Spain) The film fails to go beyond Cheval's self-absorption. Rated: 4/5 Dec 11, 2019 Full Review Graeme Tuckett Stuff.co.nz The Ideal Palace is an affectionate, but quite often surprisingly gritty film. Rated: 4/5 Jun 21, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Karen C I think there's special footage in movies filmed on location for audiences...it gives us a view of a part of the world we've never been to. This is such a movie, and we understand the era it was meant to be, but updated years on the screen. Such a building, a true story is totally amazing. It's also a positive human tale, reminding us that life was simpler back then for working folk. I think Gaudi may have been inspired by this palace for his Barcelona architecture. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/24 Full Review Audience Member I Loved this movie ...so much atmosphere and French scenery and I though it was tastefully done....with superb acting......I disagree with the other critiques totally...It was a wonderful film and captured human feelings and the personalities of the characters to perfection....That is was a true story made it all the better...life is greater than fiction and this movie certainly endorses that theory....though a sad movie so be prepared with tissues Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Such a lovely story of the love and determination shown to achieve his goal and the result can still be seen today Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member A bit long but worth it. A real story which will make you cry... in the right way Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a gentle true story. The tension in the narrative is the result of the poor social skills of Cheval, the postman. All through the movie, we're never sure just how he is going to manage his life circumstances and his relationships with his acquaintances and family. It's a slow and beautiful, very unusual, love story, told over many years as Cheval laboriously builds a palace for his daughter — the only way he obviously feels he can express his deep love for her. The palace still exists and is, apparently, a popular tourist attraction. The cinematography is well done. It's an interesting story but it feels a bit long. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A REAL DOWNER OF A FILM - but beautifully done Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
