Critics Consensus

A beautifully animated history lesson, The Inventor seems somewhat uncertain as to which audience it's trying to reach, but it remains amusing and often engaging.

Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) It's a role written for Stephen Fry... it's perhaps harder to know exactly who the audience is. Mar 12, 2024 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Charming and informative as it is, the film may struggle to engage younger audiences accustomed to more overt comedy in their animated movies and less grave-robbing. Rated: 3/5 Mar 10, 2024 Full Review Cath Clarke Guardian It’s a bit of a bore and a chore, and feels like the kind of “educational” film that will be foisted on kids in class during wet playtime on rainy days. Rated: 2/5 Mar 4, 2024 Full Review Terry Staunton Radio Times There's a charming old-school element to the animation, the character design reminiscent of vintage Magic Roundabout, but the history lesson aspects of the narrative are perhaps a little too advanced for younger viewers. Rated: 3/5 Aug 8, 2024 Full Review John Kirk Original Cin The animation, reminiscent of the '60’s Rankin/Bass Christmas specials, serves to reinforce a sense of innocence and sweetness. And it offers children a real-life super-hero who never stopped asking questions. Rated: B-plus Apr 22, 2024 Full Review Dulcie Pearce The Sun (UK) There’s little to hold the attention of younger watchers. And even a cameo from the Mona Lisa can’t raise a smile. Paul S Overall good. I think my daughter, 8, was a bit too young to know the characters. Ages 10-13 could probably enjoy it more or get more out of it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/25/23 Full Review Levi Wonderful animation, lovely music, and a nice break from typical modern animated movies. Love the return of 2d animation and all for the stop motion. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/23/23 Full Review Lea K Beautiful animation but my child had a hard time following it Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/16/23 Full Review Lydia M Despite having some beautiful visuals, this film was boring at best. My kid and I were both desperate for the film to come to an end about half way through. While it tries to deal with some serious and meaningful concepts, it really doesn’t pull it off. Feels like a drawn out version of the tired educational films they often show at museums that don’t take entertainment into account as much as you’d like. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/03/24 Full Review LABEL Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/10/24 Full Review null I took my two kids aged 6 and 7 to watch this move. It was DULL, the voices and accents were NOT clear the majority of the time. The storyline had no flow whatsoever it seemed to dart all over the place. People in the cinema with kids were all leaving half way through the movie. We only stayed as we paid a small fortune on the tickets, I feel like I have been "ripped off". This movie should be rated 15 not a PG. If you have kids under 15 don't bother watching this! If fact miss it altogether! It was 90 minutes of our lives we won't ever get back!
