I had been wanting to see this for some time since my friend sent it to me with a bunch of movies, but I needed subtitles and never watched it. I finally tackled it though. A thought provoking movie about miracles and God's involvement in a person's life. Sadly it sometimes fell flat or felt fake. I loved the Paris side of things, showing my places and culture. RUS

One of these movies you would capture onto an indestructibe DVD or enduring media and launch into space as one of the hallmarks of our species. Shot in a timeless Paris the movie is magical and deals with most aspects of the human conditions: honesty, truth, childhood frienship, love, betrayal, survival, innocence and most of all hope. Rutger Hauer approached this role with great honesty and purpose and his performance is both modest and masterful.

I love this film. I haven't seen it for years and remember seeing it late at night / early hours of the morning and scenes have stayed with me for years. It's slow but it is stunningly performed by Rutger Hauer.

Ermanno Olmi's finest film star Rutger Hauer in possibly his finest performance. A timeless era plays backdrop to the moving tale of Andreas (Hauer), an ex-miner jailed for murder. Now released and homeless he's given 200 francs by a mysterious stranger (Anthony Quayle), on the condition he turns his life around and repays the debt within one week.
