Leslie Felperin Guardian A curio that's lain dormant for many years since it first sashayed on to screens in 1985, this Japanese teeny-bop musical supports the argument that not all cult films need to be revived. Rated: 2/5 Mar 17, 2021 Full Review Chase Burns The Stranger (Seattle, WA) Some of the sequences are fun, many are not, and there's a long third act that involves lots of western wear and singing cowboys, which is not my bag. Dec 8, 2021 Full Review Christopher Machell CineVue It would be hard to argue that we're plumbing the depths of human experience here. But if you can get on board with the daftness there's heart, humour, and a true pop sensibility to be discovered aplenty. Mar 23, 2021 Full Review Brent McKnight The Last Thing I See This lost Japanese musical oddity from 1985 fills a gaping chasm in my soul I didn't even know was there. It also has maybe the most WTF twist ever, and this is a movie that's basically non-stop WTF moments from one end to the other. Rated: B+ Jun 26, 2020 Full Review Nathanael Hood Unseen Films ...the film is an irresistible time capsule of mid-80s Japanese weirdness with a soundtrack that still rocks even today. Rated: 8/10 Jul 27, 2019 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Though not quite in a class of its own, Legend Of The Stardust Brothers belongs to a select club of broadly successful camp pop musicals which rarely finds new members. isla s This is a seriously quirky and surreal film with a real 'b-movie' feel to it. It has a comic book feel, or style, to it. It's like a series of energetic, frenetic music videos, with a loose plot between them. There are cheap, 1980s electronic sound effects but that sort of adds to its charm I suppose. The black and white still shots of an unamused crowd/audience made me smile. It's amusing, yes but very wacky. Very random. A bit too bizarre and weak on precise plot points for some, I imagine, this won't overly appeal to all, so I wouldn't recommend it outright but if it sounds interesting then you may enjoy it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is an absolute blast start to finish, despite being a bit too long for its own good. While some jokes fall flat, heavily relying on childish slapstick, some visual gags are incredibly effective and funny for those with an absurdist sense of humor. The music is really great in this movie, and if there are songs more "meh," the snappy visuals are enough to keep you entertained. Is it a fundamentally well made movie? There are some impressive effects here and there for the time and some scenes are very innovative, but it's kind of a disorganized mess in terms of its structure. So i'd have to say no. But is it a fun watch that is a definite essential for any b-movie musical lover? definitely. Though it's not perfect, it's truly a fresh experience that if in the right mindset, you will not regret. It's a crime that it's not more well known of. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Ceaselessly creative and brimming with boisterous energy, a burlesque of the pop music industry simply too biting for the time, it does this gem a disservice to backhandedly compliment it as some sort of newfound "cult classic"—the movie, rather, is a work of surprising and exuberant lampoonery that makes up for in self-contained vitality what it lacks in a preexisting audience. Oh, and the songs are pitch perfect and rocking, to boot. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
