What to Know

Critics Consensus

This animated deep cut from The Lord of the Rings mythos has plenty of spectacle, but its clichéd characters and uneven animation resemble middle of the road more than they do Middle Earth.

Robbie Collin Daily Telegraph (UK) The War of the Rohirrim may be more enjoyable when consumed not as spin-off but rip-off – a fantasy anime epic that just so happens to share some elements (and music cues) with the Tolkien world. Rated: 3/5 Jan 8, 2025 Full Review Jonathan Romney Financial Times The characters, executed in clean-lined 2D, are lifeless, oddly stiff in their movements. Rated: 2/5 Dec 23, 2024 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com I found The War of the Rohirrim to feel more like a spiritual sequel to Ralph Bakshi’s 1978 version of The Lord of the Rings than it did Jackson’s Academy Award-winning live-action trilogy. Rated: 3/4 Dec 21, 2024 Full Review Lee Zumpe Tampa Bay Newspapers “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” feels like explanatory footnotes that have been rather gracelessly fleshed out to capitalize on the popularity of the intellectual property. Feb 20, 2025 Full Review Don Shanahan Cinephile Hissy Fit Podcast Powerful animation and a proud addition to the lore from the cradle of Peter Jackson. Jan 31, 2025 Full Review Matt Schley Japan Times “The War of the Rohirrim” does a decent job of replicating the epic scale of the Jackson films, but the fun is nowhere to be found. This was a story that should’ve stayed in the appendices. Rated: 2/5 Jan 23, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Matt B The movie was OK but just that. Nothing spectacular tbh Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/25 Full Review Joshua I really enjoyed War of The Rohirrim. The background animation looked as realistic as the backgrounds in LOTR AND THE HOBBIT Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Jeff Choppy animation, bad pacing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/29/25 Full Review Michael M The fighting scenes showed the potential this could have been... sadly it is very apparent that they were rushed and pushed this out. several scenes felt unpolished and some even unfinished. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review Levi Action was cool, some of the animation looked great although personally didnt love how it looked against the landscapes Wasnt the best LOTR entry but still fun Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Sad LOTR fan Second worst movie I have ever seen Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
