What to Know

Critics Consensus

This animated deep cut from The Lord of the Rings mythos has plenty of spectacle, but its clichéd characters and uneven animation resemble middle of the road more than they do Middle Earth.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com I found The War of the Rohirrim to feel more like a spiritual sequel to Ralph Bakshi’s 1978 version of The Lord of the Rings than it did Jackson’s Academy Award-winning live-action trilogy. Rated: 3/4 Dec 21, 2024 Full Review Zaki Hasan San Francisco Chronicle @hen the credits roll, one can’t help but come away feeling like we were running on a treadmill for a little over two hours. Sure, you got your steps in, but you haven’t gotten anywhere. Dec 19, 2024 Full Review Coleman Spilde Salon.com There is never a moment where “Rohirrim” fully comes into its own. And though it’s finely animated, the film is plagued by the nagging feeling that it exists merely to extend Warner Bros.’ copyright. Dec 19, 2024 Full Review Jayne Nelson Radio Times Inventive direction and storytelling make this a propulsive, thrilling experience, although the simplistic character designs sometimes clash uncomfortably with the hyper-real landscapes of Rohan. Sparkstealer This a movie meant to be seen on the big screen. Did you like Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy? You'll like this. Like anime? You'll like this. That being said, the rotoscoping does stick out sometimes it even gave me flashbacks to the Rankin-Bass version of LOTR, which is why I can't give the movie five stars. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review Lauren T great cinematography and battle scenes Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review Kelly We didn't understand why it was rated R, other than violence. But the movies had just as much violence and they were PG13. I think it would have had more success if the rating had been PG13. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review Richard J Definitely consider watching this movie in the theaters. Although presented in animated format, the movie still carries the fantastical epic atmosphere through its plotline. The story adequately occupies a domain of the Tolkien universe, without being overly superfluous in its use of material from preceding films and books. The movie deserves to be judged on its own merit and production without the expectations set from any of the Tolkien trilogies. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review Mustached Movie Man After seeing the hair and costuming of several of the main characters here, I can attest that LOTR is a perfect franchise to get an anime film. As a whole, the film was good, but it felt like it was missing an extra punch, if you will. The LOTR have such epic, mythological-level stakes and villains, that it felt weird to not have that here. And I think that's what made it seem like something was missing. If I had watched the official trailer they released, I would have known this (and the plot of the entire movie facepalm ... don't watch the full official trailer). But overall I enjoyed it, and I liked so much of what was on screen, it was just missing that extra oomph. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review Angela P. I like that they went with an anime style of animation for this one. It helps draw you in to the more fantastical elements and story building. It might have suffered from being released around the same time as Mufasa and Wicked, et cetera. That being said, it was a good addition to the LOTR universe. I always welcome more animated fantasy movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review Read all reviews
