Sylvia Suffolk (Claudette Colbert) is a married woman expecting her first baby, but her husband is away, serving in the First World War. While in the employ of surgeon Rene Gaudin (Charles Boyer), Sylvia receives word that her spouse has been killed in battle. She soon seeks solace from her grief in the arms of Rene, but when she and her new beau go on a vacation to Switzerland, she is shocked to learn that her husband may still be alive -- a revelation that jeopardizes her new romance.
