A touching tale about love, loss, and forging your own path, THE MATTACHINE FAMILY proves that family is what you make it. When their foster child is returned to his birth mother, the lives of Thomas (Nico Tortorella) and Oscar (Juan Pablo Di Pace) are dramatically altered. Oscar throws himself into work, traveling across the country to film a TV show while his husband Thomas finds himself lost, and without a family. Thrust on a journey of self-discovery, Thomas leans on his friends (Emily Hampshire) as he reevaluates his current path and the missing piece he can’t quite seem to put to rest -- his role of being a Dad. First-time feature filmmaker Andy Vallentine teamed with his real-life husband, writer Danny Vallentine, to craft this touching film which deftly portrays the highs and lows of life, love, and finding your chosen family.

As much as I enjoyed the movie, I will say that I found the female characters incredibly reductive and one-dimensional. And given the fact that this is a wholly queer film, it was really disheartening to see.

Tortorella is such a natural that it is easy to forget that Thomas is fictional. Whether he struggles from holding back tears to just putting his head on his hand, his performance feels organic and lived in as if it were indulgent, warm comfort food
