Dennis Harvey Variety Cultural specificity only brings so much freshness to an overlong tale that ultimately trades in too many familiar tropes... Oct 15, 2021 Full Review Justin Kim Loud and Clear Reviews Overall, I still cannot call The Medium a badly made film. It knows how to make an engaging story, and it uses multiple old horror tricks and shows you can still make something new out of the old. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 6, 2025 Full Review Shannon Connellan Mashable The film's first two acts move at a subtle, simmering pace, but the finale is sheer frightening chaos. Jul 28, 2023 Full Review Paul Lê Tales from the Paulside There will be times where you will undoubtedly have to look away because things on screen are plain nasty. Rated: 4/5 Jul 23, 2023 Full Review Nuha Hassan Hear Us Scream Pisanthanakun’s The Medium emerges as a contender of Western horror movies rather than a comparison. Its unique and crafty storytelling and camera techniques pave the way for future Asian horror movies. Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Dallas King Flick Feast It will be nigh-on impossible to watch The Medium and not find your pulse racing and nerves shredded by the time the camera stops rolling. Daniel M Genuinely one of the most ridiculous horror movies I’ve ever watched. It isn’t scary, it isn’t even creepy—it’s just recycled cheap nonsense in a different language and setting than you’re used to. This film is a two-hour loop between seeming like it’s about to go somewhere and being let down when it never does. Nothing makes sense, and the fake documentary setup is excruciating to watch. It’s like they packed every little idea they had into the storyboard with no rhyme or reason until they ran out of ideas, as it’s chock full of random interactions and scenes that are completely unrelated to the plot and are never tied-in or explained. The second half is basically another one of those boring knockoff exorcism movies where the demon never actually leaves the person (even though everyone vomits black for seemingly no reason). It relies heavily on cheap jump scares, bad actors attempting to contort and look scary, completely unrealistic ‘analogue’ screen effects, and has characters randomly screaming and running at the cameraman. Then it eventually just devolves into some kind of… zombie movie…? No film with this little substance should be allotted a two hour runtime. The *only* redeemable thing is the actress who plays the mother. Not her character—the actual actress. She is phenomenal and delivers believable and extremely versatile acting throughout. Quite literally everything and everyone else sucks. I want my two hours back. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/04/25 Full Review Bianca L Interesting premise and an attempt to challenge our thoughts on faith, but the last 30 minutes of the show are an absolute waste of the viewer's life. Malignant spirits gathering becomes a zombie fest? Awkward cameraman steadfastly filming until they get attacked? Their brains deserve to be eaten. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/24/25 Full Review Scott M Fantastic, truly frightening horror movie. It's very much a slow burn, but once it gets going, it blazes white-hot. The central mystery and plot are excellent, and the acting is very compelling and convincing. There were even a few scenes that were so thoroughly creepy that I found myself looking over my shoulder the rest of the night. Not many horror films can do that to me these days. Highly recommended! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/27/25 Full Review Hei Det E Masterfully crafted. Ominous. Sinister. Well worth the two hour watch. Absolutely beautifully done movie. Check this one out! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Kevin T A great folk horror film with good atmospheric dread and scares. A slow build that escalates to a climactic finish.
