The true story of saving priceless art during WWII is compelling, and the cast—Clooney, Damon, Murray, Goodman, Blanchett—is undeniably strong. Yet the film never rises above "pleasant but forgettable." The biggest problem is tone. It cannot decide if it wants to be a serious historical drama or a light Hollywood caper. The overly jaunty, intrusive music only makes this worse, turning scenes that should feel heavy into something bordering on satire. Add in a string of filler moments and a hazy line between fact and fiction, and the emotional weight never truly lands. Not a terrible film—just a missed opportunity that plays it far too safe. See more Alfred C @Alfred5583 Dec 30 The movie has a great casts indeed, good cinematography, but, too many characters to tell, to little time. For example the scene where they found a soldier dying and die in the operating table, thats suppose to be a defining moment for Private Sam, you can't feel it because no background story, just suddenly they found a wounded soldier and his dead, so Sam has to contemplating about the brutal of war. Or with Donald Jeffries, he died defending the Madonna statue. It's his redemption for all his life mistakes, but you cannot connect, because its not that deep, to little time to tell. If they make it like Saving Private Ryan, maybe.. maybe.. this movie is an easy 4/5 stars. In my opinion it feels like they tried to make an Indiana Jones/Inglorious B’s hybrid, and it just doesn’t deliver. The story telling and plot jumping will lose any audience. It is just underwhelming, disappointing, and not captivating. The comedic undertones are decent but not enough to carry me through 2 hours of well shot, poorly edited, and fairly boring film. It’s almost like i’d like if they tried a little less. Something just feels forced. See more Paul H @RT66853967 Nov 23 I don't get the negative reviews, it's telling a wide-ranging story in a limited timescale with a ton of different characters and interactions. Yes, the fact the Brits are under represented (a la U-571) and the backround not wholly explained, but overall it tells a story and an important one.
