      Critics Consensus

Its intentions are noble and its cast is impressive, but neither can compensate for The Monuments Men's stiffly nostalgic tone and curiously slack narrative.

Dave C A sombre, meaningful subject in the hands of such a talented cast should really deliver something special. Unfortunately, those behind the camera figured that would be enough to carry the movie. The script is weak, and any display of emotion is thinly veiled. Overall, it makes for a great Sunday afternoon movie Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/24 Full Review Richard J Don't let the stellar cast convince you this anything in anything less than average……a potentially good story made mediocre at best. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review John M It's very entertaining and undemanding. The plot is a bit silly: George Clooney saving major works of Western Civilisation from the Nazis and then, by minutes, from the Soviets. But culture and war is a serious subject. Film has a cast of very famous faces. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review Liesbeth d There's a historical mistake (27:06). On the map you see The Netherlands with Flevoland on it. That didn't exist yet in WWII. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review Kalvir K Interesting movie with good range of set pieces. Could benefit from more character development and a story which is more coherent. But then again it was directed by an actor, George Clooney, and he did a fair job Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/09/24 Full Review Amber P Compelling story, but told in too cheesey/campy manner. Wendy Ide Times (UK) The monumental star power behind this amiable but rather soft-boiled war film goes some way towards papering over the narrative cracks. Feb 5, 2024 Full Review Kate Muir Times (UK) George Clooney's simplistic wartime art heist movie staggers between parody and sincerity, failing at both. Jan 2, 2018 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire If you've ever doubted how thoroughly a poor score can wreck an otherwise perfectly acceptable motion picture, get thee to 'Monuments Men.' Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Emiliano Basile EscribiendoCine The comedic tone, in the best M.A.S.H. (1972) series fashion, is gratifying and lightens the solemn burden of the not-so-subtle messages. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 7/10 Mar 1, 2024 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies The Monuments Men puts the spotlight on a group of heroes tasked with saving stolen art but the film's mixed tone prevents it from being a better film. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 9, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies As a lover of the fun ensemble war pictures that were all but gone by the end of the 1960s, Clooney’s vision and approach hits the target.
