In 19th-century London, jewel thief Nicholas Revel (Robert Montgomery) has a problem: A serial killer is active in the same territory that he is. Naturally, the police are narrowing their investigation around him. Not wanting to be mistaken for a murderer who targets police officers, Revel begins to investigate the slayings and discovers that they're laid out in an X-pattern. Using this knowledge, Revel decides to switch from thief to sleuth in hopes of catching the killer.
