Anton Bitel Sight & Sound part Biutiful, part Dellamorte Dellamore, with an implacably vindictive ghost returning to reify the dysfunction that has taken possession of Stênio's unhappy home. It's a gory, unpredictable melodrama, where morality survives mortality. Oct 15, 2018 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts This film is definitely worth your time because it's so thoughtful in the way they chose to tell the story. Rated: 6/10 Oct 27, 2020 Full Review Sebastian Zavala Kahn Me gusta el cine It's absolutely conventional, combining elements of far more famous (and scarier) horror movies. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Sep 10, 2019 Full Review Oscar Goff Boston Hassle Through it all, The Nightshifter captures the dread, mordant humor, and visceral horror of classic EC Comics. Jul 25, 2019 Full Review Terry Mesnard Gayly Dreadful The Nightshifter is at its best when it's focused on the more grounded reality of Stênio's life and the very real and violent world around him. Rated: 3/5 Jul 15, 2019 Full Review Andrew Wyatt The Lens Despite flashes of vicious inspiration, The Nightshifter is mostly content to pummel its distasteful protagonist with tiresome haunted-house shocks. Audience Member The general ideia is good, but the control of tone, tension and the underdeveloped narrative get in the way of it being a good experience. It is clear that this movie was made before the director had enough experience to pull it off. It tries to be a horror movie but it fails to create tension with poor execution. The actors did a good job and there were some good decisions, but, overall, it is a movie that wants to be more than what its creators could do. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Inventive and unique plot, with exceptionally convincing performances by the frontman, Daniel de Oliveira. The movie tells us a familiar story about humanity: while in throes of emotional pain and betrayal, how we act on that pain can have negative consequences far worse than the cause of the pain itself. Driven by the universal desire to right a wrong, to bring justice to an unjust world, we may not realize until it's too late that the impact of our actions can permeate into the lives of those we love the most, bringing harm to the innocent who have no involvement in the original sin. Stenio, played by de Oliveira, embodies this principle with adroit dexterity. As the dead speak to Stenio, it reminds us that the internal voices of our moral compass can sometimes become distorted by emotional distress, driving even good people to make harmful choices. The pain inflicted upon us by the betrayal of those we love can mutate that internal guidance of morality for personal gain, bring us to the brink of madness, and even carry into the hereafter. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member I feel like Shudder (who produced this) may have meddled in the production at some point, since the set-up is so muted and morbidly amusing, and the third act is so conventional, with Stênio's deceased wife Odette attacking his family in familiar demon mode and using all the powers of darkness. It;s a fun film but I thought the idea of 'betraying the secrets of the dead would lead to a more elegant reprisal, and not just slamming doors, flashing knives, and possessed babysitters. The Sao Paolo setting and good performances carry it off but it's a pity it devolves into a domestic dispute since the societal violence and choas seems to be a string factor early in the film. Stênio is a refreshingly despicable anti-hero. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews
