Par H @Parhwy 1d The Pier (2011) is an 84-minute-long drama from Ireland I saw on Prime in April 2026. Watching this film with its title in mind and one of the main character’s life reminded me of the James Joyce quote: "A pier is a disappointed bridge" – Ulysses. Gerard Hurley is writer, producer, director and star. I have come to have cautious reservations of films where one person has more than one role in the film’s making. This film did not feel like one where the word "yes" was said too often when "no" was the better choice. The worst character, the dad, struck me as acted quite well. Scenes, interiors, settings, costuming – all felt authentic. There is a romcom element to this film however it bookends the main story. Rewatch? No. Recommend? Yes. 6/10. The drama is formulaic, which is disappointing, as the cinematography is as interesting as the budget will allow it to be so one should expect more from the screenplay. Most of its charm comes from the aggressive Irish humour and the obvious one liners of Karl Johnson's father character. See more 09/22/2012 Great little movie about a relationship between a father and son in rural Ireland, very moving with out been manipulative, well written with great characters the acting was wonderful very honest and understated. The only flaw was Lili Taylor should have been used more in the film. If you have a chance check it out. See more 04/12/2012 Okay little Irish film. A pleasant trip with no surprises.
