Critics Consensus

Half social allegory, half home-invasion thriller, The Purge attempts to make an intelligent point, but ultimately devolves into numbing violence and tired clichés.

For all its willingness to serve the viewer generous dollops of violence, noise, and terror, The Purge is oddly lacking in energy. Go to Full Review

... though the film struggles to flesh out this rather Dystopian concept (something nearly every futuristic film has these days), it succeeds in its gripping suspense and romantic eye for violence. Go to Full Review

The big thing with this film is the same thing with every film in this genre; it's extremely predictable and the characters do things they would never do in real life. Go to Full Review

Introduces an entirely fresh and interesting premise and universe, only to completely squander that potential with a generic home-invasion thriller. Go to Full Review

Whereas DeMonaco tries to say something is deeply wrong with a society that needs to purge its violent impulses, it’s unsettling to sit in a crowd that completely misses the point. Go to Full Review

Anthony 03/31/2024 Perhaps in 2013, it was a good movie but watching it with today's standards, this movie felt like it didn't have the same edge to it. See more Chris S @Janomi 3d The Purge presents a fantastic high-concept premise. The idea of a society that legalizes all crime for one night each year is one of the most original horror-thriller concepts of the 2010s, raising fascinating questions about morality, class division, government power, and human nature. It's the kind of setup that immediately grabs your attention. Ethan Hawke gives the film more credibility than it might otherwise have had, portraying a man whose success is tied to the very system now threatening his family. His performance helps ground the story, while Lena Headey brings emotional weight to the escalating danger. The biggest issue is that the premise is more interesting than the story itself. Rather than fully exploring its broader implications, the film settles into a fairly conventional home-invasion thriller. The tension works, but it often feels like the more fascinating movie exists outside the house. Still, the concept alone makes The Purge a memorable horror film. See more Brandon M @RT95326231 Jun 7 The whole concept was stupid to begin with. Killing homeless people won't reduce crime. Assistance and support will reduce the desperation of the lower class. And don't even get me started on all of the destruction and damage to public infrastructure that would happen during those 12 hours of chaos. For a moment, I was going to give this 2 out of 5 stars, but it's even worse. When the invaders are inside the house, there are multiple times when people don't react to the sound of gunshots coming from other parts of the house. The continuity is ruined. 1 out of 5 stars. It's awful. See more Roger A. @Rogeradams6oh6 May 13 Not bad. Bit demented but good lol. See more Jose L @RT12705743 Apr 18 this movie was actually fucking ass. i wanted the characters to die all of the movie and i couldnt really care for them. WOULD NOT RECCOMEND. id rather watch cocomelon over ts. The whole family had the survival instincts and the brains of fucking walnuts. the only one that was semi smart was the father and some how he was the one who died?????????? like bro what my little 6 year old sister could make better bullshit then this See more Pikachu P @Crafnight405 Apr 9 + Ethan Hawke + Rhys Wakefield ++ Idee + Masken + Kill im Hobbyzimmer ---- Lena Headey - der Sohn - zu dunkel - langezogene Szenen - Kills - Zu wenig von der Nacht generell See more Read all reviews
