10/14/2010 It's amazing that the GDR even permitted this film to be made, with its bias toward social democracy and commentary on individualism. Although the film was quickly suppressed by the 11th Plenum and never screened in the GDR, we are fortunate this seminal film was preserved for its rare glimpse of a culture lost in time. See more 07/19/2010 WOW!!! This is one of the most fascinating Movies i ever saw it's a Mixture of Political Drama, Film Noir & Melodrama it is settled in East Berlin in the Early 60's in the Time of the Building of the Wall of Berlin in 1960 a Young Man get's arrested for Agiating against the Goverment his Sister who is a very good Student and very intelligent and want to be a Student of Law because her Brother is arrested she isn't allowed to Study she is working as a Waitress in a Hip Berlin Bar and met a Man who seems interessting to her but then she found out he is the Cop who arrested her Brother but she fall in Love with him after all this Pigs it is the first Man who is nice to her but he is married to a Ice Cold Business Lady a Struggle of Feelings explode and it is more and more the Personality of the Man shown in the Root of his Heart a Good Man he hunts ruthless Critics of the System because this his Job and the Harder he are the more Respectable he is... This is a Very Controversial Socio-Critic which was forbidden in East Germany alltough produced from the State-Own Defa Studios it was the first Socio-Critic Movie Defa develops who critize the Own Regime but many will follow all forbidden for the East German Folk but well seen in the Personal Cinemas of the Leading Class and in the Western World it shows how the Communist's gets stronger and force their Grip slings the Freedom which is still present in East Berlin (Stadtluft macht frei) but more and more swip away when the Gestapo-like Stasi hunts the Critics it is to seen on the lot of Partys who are to seen the People dance and drink to the Music and have Fun but one Word against the System and everybody is quiet and the Critic get arrested also it is shown that the Folk must live the Life of a Worker while the Leading Class is eduacted and even can hunt (which was strongly forbidden for the Folk) also the Movie shows lot of 60's Culture and the Culture of East Germany for me as a West German East Germany was always something like The Other Germany similar but other another Country but my People also it have many Scenes that freezing me like when the Rabbit Girl swarms of seeing the World and just means the Eastern World or when her Brother gets free and asks "They build this Wall i heard is there any Chance to get trough?" and his Sister is silent and he say "No More Ku Damm Ey?" and she answers "No but they build more on our Side" and he say "On our Side?" for a Film Noir untypical the Film play in Bright Daylight all the Time which is a Special Trick East Germany is shown as a Coloured Happy State but spontanous Evil Men appears and the Brightness turn into Horror Overall a View on East Germans Films is recommended it can compare with the West German Cinema and is one of the most fascinating ever See more Read all reviews
