Ken Jaworowski New York Times A fine ode to the excitement that Off Off Broadway theater once generated, and a wistful look at an ailing artist as she contemplates her life. Aug 22, 2018 Full Review Richard Brody The New Yorker Fornés exerts a hypnotic force of stardom, while her offhanded yet urgent remarks resound with life-tested literary authority. Aug 20, 2018 Full Review Julia Swift My Champlain Valley An inspiring documentary on Maria Irene Fornes, the groundbreaking playwright, director and teacher. Filmed over years, the filmmaker/subject relationship transforms to true friendship. The film is a celebration of the undying artistic spirit. Rated: 10 Dec 27, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Such a masterclass in being free of constraints and rules, and following your muse and its best friend the id into essential engagement with actors and the stage. María Irene Fornés seems to breeze right past the inner censor every moment of her creative life, and it is evident from this rough-cut-but-loving film how purely alive she was. Toward the end when filmmaker Michelle Memran speaks of being truly present to and with another person, it seems that Fornés whole journey is about that kind of immediate presence. It's not about worrying what the audience will say or what your relatives will think, but just expressing your unfiltered observations and intrigues. A dialogue about being openly lesbian in Cuba (whether a memory of the past or any reflection of the present day isn't clear) and why she left captures the perplexity of a woman who wouldn't know how to be anyone but who she is. Must, must see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
