While out apartment hunting, college pals Noelle and Addie stumble upon the deal of a lifetime: a posh duplex on Manhattan's Upper East Side. But soon after moving in, a more sinister picture of the apartment emerges when a mysterious woman arrives and claims the property used to belong to the infamous and recently-deceased Jeffrey Epstein. With this news, Noelle becomes obsessed with the visitor--to the point of infatuation. As the pair plunge deeper into the conspiracies of the Epstein case, Addie falls into her own bizarre state: a pseudo-possession complete with inexplicable fits of age-regressed sexual mania. As they peel back on these strange occurrences, the truth reveals itself to be more twisted than they could have ever imagined.

It's hard not to admire its often ungainly attempts to achieve its ambitions, but The Scary of Sixty-First is a horror provocation that disappoints as often as it thrills.

All of this takes place in what Nekrasova has likened to Eyes Wide Shut New York, and it is, in fact, as alluring as its influences, pulling viewers into a film that teeters between absurdly funny and absurdly frightening.

Do we really need a film where the despicable actions of sexual abusers are brushed off as the fault of Satan and his followers, or should this have been a film that held Epstein and others like him accountable?

The Scary of Sixty-First doesn't always completely come together, but Nekrasova has crafted an uncompromising and compelling movie that plays like a slap in the face and isn't easily forgotten.

This is a movie where when you hear what it is, your first reaction is gonna be, “That should not have been made,” and while I often defend that kind of movie… this movie should not have been made.

Absolutely engaging and an interesting take on such new and horrid subject matter. The movie has such great static shots that go further and Dasha Nekrasova made a fine debut effort, I expect to see more from her soon.

the Scary of 61st, The Stupid of 61st, The Horny of 61st... I don't know what to call it. It's not quite bottom of the barrel though thanks to the stupid comedy and um -- memorable -- sex scenes.. 1.6/10

Synopsis
