Critics Consensus

Although it struggles to really get inside the true story that inspired it, The Silent Twins is still a well-acted and poignant dramatization of actual events.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk As a larger statement about the ways in which outsiders and marginalised people are crushed by our world, it hits the nail right on the head. Rated: 4/5 Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Amon Warmann Empire Magazine Some wonderful visual flourishes and two brilliant central performances by Wright and Lawrence help to illuminate the Gibbons sisters’ headspaces. But without important context, true insight and understanding remains elusive. Rated: 3/5 Dec 14, 2022 Full Review Clarisse Loughrey Independent (UK) It’s hard not to be moved by how smoothly Smoczyńska drifts away from the biopic elements of Andrea Seigel’s screenplay to instead inhabit the rich, internal world the Gibbons occupied. Rated: 4/5 Dec 13, 2022 Full Review Sarah Vincent Cambridge Day Given the mental health issues raised, “Silent Twins” can at times be an uncomfortable, grueling movie to watch. Unlike in Jeff Malmberg’s documentary “Marwencol” (2010) or the British series “Chewing Gum” (2015-2017), the audience gets no palate-cleansin Rated: 2/4 Jun 9, 2024 Full Review Prabhjot Bains Tilt Magazine Heart-breaking on the surface but utterly boring where it counts. Nov 2, 2023 Full Review Greg Carlson Vague Visages Lawrance and Wright deserve credit for depicting the idiosyncratic personalities of Jennifer and June — loving and fighting as artistic collaborators and jealous rivals — but The Silent Twins plugs away without the urgency or rising stakes. Lucille T Incredible film! It explores the life and mental controlling of two youngsters - fraternal twins - who chose to treat the world with silence instead of communication. It almost feels like it is one person with dual personalities - but - no, it is twins. The world does not understand them - cannot fathom how to accept nor treat them - and how they took their innermost thoughts and reactions to the written word to its limits by being published authors. It was almost as if they were mutes - who heard the world but chose to avoid it until they 'came of age' and started to experiment in hostile and aggressive manners. A rebellion from duo from childhood - it is a remarkable work that had me spellbound. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/28/22 Full Review Marc Good movie, enjoyed the creativity in bringing this story to life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/28/22 Full Review James S I thought that The Silent Twins was one of the worst movies I have ever watched. I could not watch the entire movie. My wife and I had to leave. It was that painful to watch. The movie took far too long to identify the plot and the intent of the main characters. We asked for a movie credit and the Bowtie Cinemas manager in Richmond, Virginia refused to give us one. We finally had the courage to start coming back out again due to the pandemic, and this is the negative experience that we experienced. A simple movie credit is not too much to ask. We didnt ask for a refund after watching a junk movie! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/25/22 Full Review Susan Excellent acting, absorbing story. Authentic. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/24/22 Full Review Cassandra I enjoyed this movie, It's a definite most see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/22/22 Full Review Kelvin G The performances by the leads were extremely good but this movie was really hard to like. The main characters were clearly in need of help were extremely unlikable through the entirety of the movie. It's another based on movie that illustrates the mental struggles that often accompany being very creative, as well as how the system wasn't really built to help people like them at the time.
