Critics Consensus

The Strangers: Prey at Night may appeal to fans of the original who've been jonesing for a sequel, but its thin story and ironic embrace of genre tropes add up to a bloody step back.

J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Grimly efficient sequel to the 2008 shocker The Strangers. Mar 9, 2020 Full Review Amy West Empire Magazine With its infuriatingly dim-witted characters and generic slasher movie feel, The Strangers: Prey At Night is a surprisingly tame and forgettable rehash. Rated: 2/5 May 5, 2018 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) No tension, no drama, no interest, no scares, no emotional involvement and no motive. No chance. Rated: 0/5 May 4, 2018 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies The movie is a wash of reprocessed horror gimmicks which we’ve all seen over and over. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 25, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Prey at Night makes the audience feel everything it wants us to, and what's more, it outdoes the original in every way, making for an unexpected, satisfying slasher - a rarity to be sure. Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 14, 2022 Full Review Eve Tushnet Patheos I loved watching this film, for one reason and one reason only: it is gorgeous. Jun 5, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A very surface level slasher movie that follows a specific formula without offering anything special when it comes to story, but due to an incredible cast, and good production, it is a watchable movie, enjoyable slasher. I love the first Strangers movie, and the first one also follows this slasher formula, but has enough extra stuff in the story that add substance to it. This one, not so much. That being said, I do recommend giving it a go, since it was better than I expected. It's not a bad movie, just nothing out of the ordinary. Thank you. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review Edward V This movie is much more like a classic 80s slasher than its predecessor was, for better or worse. There are even several shot for shot references to the classics such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Scream. But with these influences, I believe it is much less scary that the first one (or at least the first half of the first one), and what remains is a Friday the 13th bloody action title. Again, some people may like this genre and aesthetic more, but I found it to be nothing special. In the mountain of horror movies, this one is very forgettable, but not a complete waste of time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/03/24 Full Review Matthew M This movie was so awful, It made me create this account too warn you not to waste your time! Absolutely terrible! I wish I could give it zero stars. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/24 Full Review Liam D While on improvement over the original it still suffers from characters being either uninteresting or completely moronic Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/28/24 Full Review Dawson P This movie is so underrated and I don't see why people say its so bad it has good acting and good killers and good music Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Jessica F If I could give zero stars I would. This movie was so frustrating to watch. No development, dumb as mud characters, and overly convenient timing of the killers. Not even a fun bad watch just lazy and frustrating. O/5 would never recommend! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Read all reviews
