Critics Consensus

The Strangers: Prey at Night may appeal to fans of the original who've been jonesing for a sequel, but its thin story and ironic embrace of genre tropes add up to a bloody step back.

J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Grimly efficient sequel to the 2008 shocker The Strangers. Mar 9, 2020 Full Review Amy West Empire Magazine With its infuriatingly dim-witted characters and generic slasher movie feel, The Strangers: Prey At Night is a surprisingly tame and forgettable rehash. Rated: 2/5 May 5, 2018 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) No tension, no drama, no interest, no scares, no emotional involvement and no motive. No chance. Rated: 0/5 May 4, 2018 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies The movie is a wash of reprocessed horror gimmicks which we’ve all seen over and over. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 25, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Prey at Night makes the audience feel everything it wants us to, and what's more, it outdoes the original in every way, making for an unexpected, satisfying slasher - a rarity to be sure. Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 14, 2022 Full Review Eve Tushnet Patheos I loved watching this film, for one reason and one reason only: it is gorgeous. Jun 5, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Allyssa Deleon Hated it, walked out. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Audience Member This movie had a Lot of potential considering how good the first one was. But unfortunately it was poorly written and had hands down some of the stupidest characters to where it wasn't even funny. It made me want to scream and punch the characters. There was some reasonable suspension in certain areas such as one of the final scenes. But the final fight in the pool was dumb. They fell into the pool with a shot in the dark lame excuse for a fight scene. Ending badly. Considering the gory uptake it took witch I consider being ok it got gory more so than the first and I don't know how I feel about it. The characters were what made it bad. They where very very stupid in all situations such as going into the open. Going in houses and going after the noises then proceeding to get hurt or die. Twords the end the last one of the last surviving people makes smart choices but overall there not smart and make such stupid choices Including the decision of not killing people when they have the chance or leaving when they could've. The ending does leave two alive and the strangers dead. Both surviving people are badly injured and unknown if one survives because he is in a coma in the hospital. And then hearing the sound and knocks that the stranger makes on the hospital door then the credits roll. Don't watch this movie don't waste your time watch the original please that ones so much better. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Jason W Very good slasher with memorable moments. The cinematography was excellent with some fantasic shots and scenery (the swimming pool scene is one to note). Although the Kinsley character was so unlikable in the start, plus the idea it takes place in a trailer park yet no one else is around is a bit strange unless the Strangers murdered everyone in the park before the family got there. The ending was definitely an homage to TCM. Very enjoyable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Alec H A film with such moronically unlikable characters that you will find yourself rooting for the killers. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review Collin H Honestly funny how bad it was. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Ricardo D This series should have just been one and done. Crazy they are making a 4th and 5th. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
