Noel Murray Los Angeles Times Director Mark Meir and screenwriter Yuri Baranovsky take too long to get to the movie’s biggest twist; and in general, “The Summoned” is too light on action and tension. Jul 8, 2022 Full Review Kat Hughes THN Not so much the ‘next Get Out’, The Summoned is instead an interesting, but somewhat subdued, Faustian story. Rated: 3/5 Aug 28, 2022 Full Review Shaun Munro Flickering Myth The Summoned begins in tantalising fashion and benefits from the work of skilled lead J. Quinton Johnson, yet becomes considerably less interesting the longer it ambles on. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 26, 2022 Full Review Mark H. Harris Black Horror Movies First-time director Mark Meir does pepper in some striking visuals, though, and he’s able to make good use of the scenic locale, but it’s not enough to liven up the pedestrian plot. Rated: 2.7/5 Jul 22, 2022 Full Review Anton Bitel Projected Figures In Mark Meir’s Faustian feature debut, an ambitious African-American man finds himself caught between contract and script Jul 16, 2022 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film The subtext here is much darker than the story itself. brad p While the story starts to fall apart in the third act, all of the performances, especially Joseph, hold ‘The Summoned' together as each character becomes more and more unhinged. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Overall, what begins as an exciting premise with a few fun, mysterious plot aspects soon falls down the hole of being highly familiar, lacking excitement with a finale that hints at a substantial payoff but only fizzles. The characters here also carry characteristics and personalities we've all seen before in horror films. While the performances are generally ok, the dialogue here feels clunky, corny, and even unintelligibly comedic. As a horror film, there are plenty of attempts at jump scares and unsettling moments, but sadly, no significant impact is ever delivered in the end. Sadly, The Summoned tries hard to have something substantial, but its familiarity and unpleasing reveals hurt this film the most. Fans of Jordan Peele will undoubtedly benefit from checking this one out the most, but I felt my time viewing it had only been wasted. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/23 Full Review Aldis H Not bad. A little boring at times, and it takes a dive downwards in the second half only to redeem itself just enough at the end to get 60%.
