Elijah and his famous girlfriend decide to attend a self-help retreat in a mansion owned by an eccentric guru. Shortly after their arrival, the young man realises he has embarked on a dangerous and psychedelic journey with a hellish debt waiting to be settled. A generational curse that reaps the souls of all those caught in the chain. "The Summoned" is a supernatural thriller with a satirical tone, centred on the rich and famous who turn to spirituality to eradicate their earthly sins. A trend that has been followed by many prominent stars of today and is often seen as a cynical way of dealing with the insatiable appetite for fame and fortune. Despite its intriguing premise, the movie is doomed by its terrible script choices and pretentious moments of humour.

While the story starts to fall apart in the third act, all of the performances, especially Joseph, hold ‘The Summoned' together as each character becomes more and more unhinged.

Overall, what begins as an exciting premise with a few fun, mysterious plot aspects soon falls down the hole of being highly familiar, lacking excitement with a finale that hints at a substantial payoff but only fizzles. The characters here also carry characteristics and personalities we've all seen before in horror films. While the performances are generally ok, the dialogue here feels clunky, corny, and even unintelligibly comedic. As a horror film, there are plenty of attempts at jump scares and unsettling moments, but sadly, no significant impact is ever delivered in the end. Sadly, The Summoned tries hard to have something substantial, but its familiarity and unpleasing reveals hurt this film the most. Fans of Jordan Peele will undoubtedly benefit from checking this one out the most, but I felt my time viewing it had only been wasted.
