What to Know

Critics Consensus

Jenny Slate remains as charming as ever, but her winsome performance isn't enough to overcome The Sunlit Night's grating tone and meandering plot.

Alissa Wilkinson Vox There's enough charm and whimsy for the story to escape coming across as too predictable... The Sunlit Night is a light and occasionally messy story of discovery, and Slate's performance anchors it all. Aug 4, 2020 Full Review Kristy Puchko Crooked Marquee The Sunlit Night is a ponderous, pretentious dud Jul 24, 2020 Full Review Chris Hewitt Minneapolis Star Tribune I can easily imagine people who wouldn't like it, but there is something beautiful about how perfectly it locates a feeling of confusion, ambivalence and grief. Rated: 3.5/4 Jul 23, 2020 Full Review Daisy Leigh-Phippard Screen Queens Too many threads tangle together without forming a pattern, and while there are flickers of feeling scattered through, its a shame that these lovely fragments of life never make up a whole. Feb 21, 2022 Full Review Deborah Krieger Bust Magazine It does feature an appealing lead performance from Slate, and is earnest and honest in its largely successful attempt to translate creative thinking onto the screen in equally creative ways. Jul 2, 2021 Full Review Susan Kamyab This Chix Flix Slate does a fantastic job with the material she is given and the scenery is beautiful, but the "The Sunlit Night" fails to shine. It's a dim, dull tale. Rated: F Jun 24, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

K B I absolutely loved this movie. What a wonderful combination of life in this movie!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review Tanya WHAT is not to like about this movie????? It's visually stunning full of lavish colors and great characters. It's different and enriching. Not stale and predictable as most top rated movies are. God! And this is my 2nd watch. Thank you writers, producers, directors and staff! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/10/23 Full Review Cricket K I think the viewers that eitĥer found the plot confusing ,patched together or out of place might have seen to many conventional films as of late. This movie had odd airy whimsey in a good way. It was quiet, sad, odd, with drops of dark humor. Great for those who watched a lot of independent films in the late 90s and miss them. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/05/23 Full Review Jason K I am completely dumbfounded by the ranking of this movie. It's the perfect blend of all the emotions done with care and a deft touch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/05/23 Full Review Erika S A sublime film that heals the viewer with rarified light, saturated color, singular people, and the love of being Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/23 Full Review William P This is a charming, quirky, off-beat drama that works well. Jenny Slate is mostly known for comic characters and stand-up but shows she's great in a dramatic role as well. The read of the cast is great (Gillian Anderson in a minor role and Zak Galifinakis in a bigger one) to very good. The real star is Norway's landscapes and the director made good use of them. Also, for students of adaptation, read the novel as well. The screenplay was done by the author and it is an excellent of compression. It's not a very long novel but it's dense and she makes really nice use of the themes and omits things and makes substitutions and additions as needed to get a similar feel on telling this story.
