Kate Erbland The Dissolve The film is a true two-hander-and Astin and Mulkey are mostly up for the task-but inept storytelling sinks the picture faster than anyone can bail it out. Rated: 2/5 May 13, 2015 Full Review Rob Thomas Madison Movie "The Surface" has such fine performances in it from Mulkey and Astin that you wish the filmmakers had trusted them more, letting them bring the film back to shore on their own. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Just north of really bad. Silly, on-the-nose dialogue and a weak premise is stretched as thin as Filo Dough. You won't care about the story or the characters. At all. It won't entertain you, but might be okay as background noise. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie has a heart! 2 very different people with 2 very different problems are thrown together and come to realize that they will not survive without believing and trusting in each other. This movie is about the root of humanity; caring about someone you've never met before and may never see again. The acting is wonderful and the plot, although simple, is perfect. There are no gunfights, no car chases, and no flying super heroes to distract from it's message: we all have the capability to make a huge difference in someone else's life! See it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member He's about to end it all when his boat runs over the wreckage of a prop plane. He saves the life of a man struggling himself. And in saving the other man's life, he saves his own. But it's a bore. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member I would recommend watching this movie, as it's certainly entertaining. Chris Mulkey's character is a laugh riot and patches over a rather pedestrian plot. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member It was a surprising movie that we ended up loving. The buildup came slowly until plot turns unexpectedly led us on a journey to want to learn more and more about these two lives. The interaction between the two main characters' motives were slowly uncovered and the dialogue was, again unexpectedly, humorous with subtleties that made us increasingly care about them.
