[Full review in Spanish] Rated: 4/5 Feb 27, 2024 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast A smart and clever found footage film that uses the tropes of the subgenre to examine mental illness. The presence of a refreshingly low-key queer character and a stunningly vulnerable performance by Jill Larson make this a must-watch. Apr 3, 2021 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast An interesting subversion of standard possession tropes that doesn't forget the emotional plights of its characters. Rated: 3.5/5 May 30, 2019 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed While half of the film is a genuinely spooky and unnerving possession tale, Adam Robitel falls prey to the tropes of found footage movies. Anthony L This is the kind of film that makes me have zero faith in America horror films. Such campy trash. Boring jump scares with zero actual horror. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/03/25 Full Review Audience Member very hard to understand Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/25 Full Review ROY Y ‘The Taking of Deborah Logan’ makes a significant impression with its nuanced portrayal of dementia alongside the more supernatural elements of possession. This documentary film involves a crew that seeks to capture the realities of Alzheimer's disease through the eyes of its older subject, Deborah Logan, and her daughter, Sarah. As the crew records their experiences, they uncover more than they anticipated. From a science-grounded perspective, this film excels in its portrayal of Deborah's gradual mental decline. The physical manifestations of her illness: disorientation, memory loss, and erratic behavior, are portrayed authentically, avoiding sensationalism that often accompanies horror films. This film effectively captures the raw emotions and vulnerabilities of the characters. When comparing these themes to the Christian faith, several aspects arise that deepen the narrative and its implications. Faith can be both a source of solace and a battleground. Deborah's transformation raises questions about the intersection of illness and spiritual warfare. The tension between fear and faith is palpable, prompting us to consider the role of hope and divine intervention in the face of seemingly insurmountable evil. The Taking of Deborah Logan has limitations related to science-based realism when its supernatural elements take center stage. The transition from a well-intended developed documentary into bizarre and horrifying manifestations happens very suddenly. It has distressed me from a gradual transcendental portrayal of illness, possession, and self-fulfilling malevolence. Concluding my review, 'The Taking of Deborah Logan' provides a compelling narrative on the experience of dementia and its intersection with faith. This film adeptly blends realism with supernatural horror, exploring profound themes of love, sacrifice, and the battle between good and evil. While it occasionally strays into territory that feels less science-grounded, its emotional weight borne by Deborah and Sarah's relationship, along with its thematic background implications, resonates with a Christian worldview. I, however, DO NOT recommend non-mature audiences to view this film. This film includes unsettling, explicit graphics, along with traumatic psychological and religious allusions. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/30/25 Full Review Jeepers C This movie is a really great slow burn psychological horror. Debra Logan is really creepy. The old woman was really scary.... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/29/25 Full Review Ary K Definitely creepy, I think it's pretty disturbing to see a vulnerable person (in this case, an elderly woman) to get to such state. Although it could be a bit slower as everything moved so fast from middle to end so it felt rushed. Worth recommending if you're looking for a quick watch Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/10/25 Full Review Andrew S Pacing, pacing, pacing. Man this movie takes what could have been a very creepy concept and moves it all WAY too quickly. Zero build up leaves you wishing you had time to get into the premise before it starts hitting you over the head in a faulty attempt to drum up quick scares. Next to zero backstory on the ‘cause’ of the ‘taking’ and the story they do cobble together is incredibly passé. And what the hell is with the filming? Am I looking through the lens of the documentarians, the camera, both? Between the plot holes, horrid pacing, and overall bad execution, the film squanders an otherwise good lead performance and what could have been a decent horror flick. Very skippable.
