Flinty bandit Black Deering (William S. Hart) seeks to exact vengeance on Tom Jordan (Joseph Singleton) after he gets left high and dry by the man during a botched train heist. Deering locates his enemy in a small town where he is now the local big shot. Furious, he then sets fire to several businesses, before hightailing it out of there. Finding refuge, he escapes to the ranch of Mary Brown (Anna Q. Nilsson), a kindhearted woman who attempts to reform Deering of his no-good ways.

Nick M This is one of the better William S. Hart pictures I've seen. The plot is pretty strong (though one of the coincidences in the plot beggars belief), the acting is believable, and the pacing is great. In too many of his films he is the only actor allowed to shine, but both Anna Q. Nilsson and Jack Richardson in particular have meaty parts and play them well. The direction and cinematography are straightforward--nothing too imaginative here--but I was engaged throughout by Hart's character development and the fairly novel storyline. He always plays such a tough-as-nails ruffian, which makes it wonderful to see him softened by a child. This brought to mind one of his early shorts from 1915: The Bad Buck of Santa Ynez.
