What to Know

Critics Consensus

Director Bill Siegel doesn't explore any new boundaries of the documentary with The Trials of Muhammad Ali, but his subject is so inherently fascinating that the movie proves gripping in spite of its familiar beats.

Kevin Jagernauth indieWire The Ali of this documentary entered the ring a phenom first, but came-of-age outside of it and grew into a man, second. Rated: A Feb 28, 2021 Full Review Joe Neumaier New York Daily News For kids who need an Ali primer, the terrific "Trials" is required watching. Feb 28, 2021 Full Review Tom Long Detroit News As with the best stories, "The Trials of Muhammad Ali" puts one man's story within a greater context. This is Ali's story, but it's America's story, too. Here, it's well told. Rated: B+ Dec 19, 2013 Full Review Norman Wilner NOW Toronto A solid if undistinguished documentary that's content to show a series of incidents rather than dig into the cultural ramifications of Ali's stand. Rated: 3/5 Feb 28, 2021 Full Review Craig Schroeder Battleship Pretension Muhammad Ali was and still is charismatic. The Trials of Muhammad Ali is not. Feb 25, 2021 Full Review Bernard Boo Way Too Indie A riveting, illuminating examination of a man who's lauded for his triumphs in the squared circle, but in fact faced and overcame much, much more trying struggles outside of the ring. Audience Member This is not a complete biopic but a collection of some significant events in Ali's life with lots left out and maybe it was a wise choice to sharpen the focus given the volume of content available. The film style feels pedestrian but anything with Ali in is always interesting so it's well worth a watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member TRIALS OF ALI is a fully comprehensive look at Muhammad's religion and its relationship to the American government, and in that sense it works like a microcosm of Islam in America. However, its laser focus on this one aspect of his illustrious life gets lost whenever it stops to do some unnecessary hero worship. Overall, it's like a school room documentary: mostly interesting but supremely dry. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Paying our respects to the champ.. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Brilliant story. Brilliant film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Read all reviews
