In late 1967, a young orphaned boy goes to live with his loving grandma in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. As the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks him away to a seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world's Grand High Witch has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe -- undercover -- to carry out her nefarious plans.

Who could improve on the regal fury of Anjelica Huston?... Certainly not Anne Hathaway, whose performance in this remake, by comparison, has more than a tinge of the high school drama club.

…Anne Hathaway does well, as does Octavia Spencer, but the comedy shrinks as the scale of the action increases, and this slick version of Roald Dahl's The Witches somehow lacks the magic of the original prose, or Quentin Blake’s beloved illustrations….

"The film The Witches (2020) starts off well; however, the protagonist has no action. Only after he turns into a mouse does anything happen. The grandmother does not seem like a grandmother, the witches do not look like normal women (as described in the book), the Grand High Witch does not stand out from the others (which she should, since she is the queen of them all), the little boy’s encounter with the witches in the grocery store is terrible because the woman does not look normal or convincing at all, the manager is dull, too much CGI was used and things ended up feeling unrealistic. I do not recommend it."

The film isn't bad, but I find it a shame that there's so much dei in this film. Good is black and bad is white. Typical for a remake in 2020 of a book that's already been filmed.
