Liam Lacey Globe and Mail An ingratiating but overly contrived Canadian coming-of-age tale. Rated: 2/4 Mar 18, 2011 Full Review Bruce DeMara Toronto Star The Year My Mom Was Dolly Parton relies on a good but not great script, well-drawn characters and performances and a pleasant, fuzzy sense of a simpler time. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 17, 2011 Full Review Liz Braun Jam! Movies A wonderfully low-key but engaging movie about identity. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 18, 2011 Full Review Norman Wilner NOW Toronto There are a few good moments in The Year Dolly Parton Was My Mom, but you have to get past a lot of distractions to appreciate them. Rated: 2/5 Mar 18, 2011 Full Review Jason Anderson eye WEEKLY Unfortunately, Johns' movie is less satisfying when it comes to matters not directly pertaining to Dolly Parton. Marty P female coming of age movie, but I could feel the pain of this little girl and I'm a grown man. There are times when I had to suspend disbelief more than what I'd like, but they were nitpicky things. When you rate a movie like this, you don't compare it to Citizen Kane, you accept it for what it is. I thought the emotional elements we're not sappy and overall, the film works really well. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Audience Member It was a good movie. The sad part was that you don't get to find out who Elizabeth Gray birth mother is. It would then have been 5 stars. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member An amazing little gem. Perfect for an intelligent 11 or 12 yr old girl who has grown beyond Disney. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved it....but then again, I'm not a critic Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/19 Full Review Audience Member I am not sure why tis movie got so many bad ratings, maybe because it does not cater to U.S American sensibilities or normal taste. I loved this movie the actors where great as was the whole 70's feel. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member A wonderfully low-key but engaging movie about identity.
